Hi all, I'm moving from cable to DSL and I need a good wireless router/ADSL2+ modem. I've had a very reliable ASUS 802.11g wireless router while I had a separate cable modem but I don't want to have to run a separate modem and router plus it's about time to make the switch to 802.11n. I live in Wellington, New Zealand so anything I can get from a NZ website or local supplier would be good. Here are my technical requirements: -ADSL2+ (VDSL2 optional - I am in VDSL2 coverage but my provider doesn't have any VDSL2 plans, I'll likely get UFB before VDSL2) -802.11n (we have ~10 wireless clients regularly connected) -At least 4 LAN ports -NAT -DHCP -Must support VPN passthrough -Firewall -Lastly and most importantly must be reliable (how much will I spend to never have to explain to my wife why the router just died?) Netgear is good but can be expensive. LinkSys (Cisco) in our opinion make very good quality parts and for a good price. I.e. CISCO LINKSYS WAG160N. Cisco is one of the world leaders in network hardware. I still love my WRT54G running DDWRT Source.

Should I mention the WRT54G is over 5 years old and still trucking like a brand new unit! LOL.

I'm come across a a number of 54G and 54GL's that have spat the dummy recently. 5 years seems to be about their lifespan. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Since you didn't mention price I can assume it's not an issue my recommendation is Fritz!box 7390 or 7340 if you are happy with fast ethernet rather than gigabit. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

Really? I guess nothing lasts forever - but for the money its well worth the investment. I've never had any problems with Linksys but everyone has different experiences I guess :).

Linksys make good hardware, but not without it's quirks and bugs. I would not touch a WAG160N. The more expensive Linksys gear is OK, but I have seen too many flaky WAG160s to not want to take the risk with another one. TP-Link make good gear for not too much cash. Netgear are good. I'd also steer clear of Dlink, but not as much as I'd steer clear of the WAG160N ;)

Yes I'm afraid I'm in the "wouldn't touch" camp for a WAG160N also. ADSL connectivity was okay, but heaps of problems with wf-fi dropping and or losing DNS settings across wi-fi. Do a search on WAG160N and wi-fi. It's depressing reading. I replaced it with a TP-Link TD-W8960N.

Wow. Ok I haven't used that particular model before - but given the overwhelming evidence I would probably think you are correct. Cheap is never the best in any brand I guess :). TP Link however - I had a gigabit switch of theirs in our switch board and one by one the network ports died on it. I had a mate with the same issue - which he bought on his own accord - not at my recommendation. Ended up replacing with a Cisco Rackmount. LOL. Maybe it was just a bad batch.

Price is a concern but more concerned with features and reliability. Once I have a shortlist of reliable ones with the features I need I'll probably rank by price.

The 7340 has 2x gigabit LAN. The other main difference is the 7390 has simultaneous dual band wifi and 512MB of built in storage.
