Looking to replace my current Vodafone supplied Huawei HG556a, lacking too many features for my use and the remote access doesn't seem to work. Have fully wired network setup with a 24port patch panel and 16 port gigabit switch in a cupboard. Would like to know whether i should get an ADSL router then use Wireless AP's (1 or 2 throughout the house) or just get another all in one wifi modem router. Requirements: DDNS support for No-IP.org Remote access VPN pass through Some kind of support for WOL over the internet (wake on wan) Solid ADSL Sync and reliable Ideally multiple SSID's for the wifi (guest ssid isolated with VLan etc) Have seen in the forums good reviews for the TP Link TD-W8960N but it doesnt seem to do multiple ssid's Any suggestions welcome

Over the weekend I replaced my Telecom router with DSL-N55U Dual-Band Wireless-N600 Gigabit ADSL Modem Router - Its just amazing. I have to place my router at the front of the house due Master Filter jack that is installed there, and to the back of the house and Upstairs - the signal strength and the download speeds are amazing and I can stream all HD movies using the Gigabit port over the wired connections as well. :)

Gargoyle on a TP Link 1043ND looks pretty good and i even have a 1043ND in use to extend the wifi in the house and also provide 4 gigabit ports to the other end of the house, so i could give that a go. However doesn't look like it supports multiple ssid's in the gui. I could also give dd wrt a try on the same router. What is the advantage of using the draytek in PPPoA to PPPoE relay/bridge mode? rather than getting a cheaper adsl modem? If i use my existing TP Link 1043ND as the main wireless router for the house is there a better way to get 4+ gigabit ports and extend the wifi to a separate section of the house (ethernet switch and wireless ap) or should i just get another 1043ND? It is in use in a rumpus room that has 4-5 wired devices down there and also needs wifi (had been using the 1043ND as a simple switch and access point with the other router doing the dhcp etc.

You can input your ISP's authentication details in to your router as a PPPoE connection, rather than having the modem do authentication and using a half bridge of double NAT setup. There are a couple of ISPs with ULL gear that can do PPPoE natively (so pretty much any modem in bridge mode would do), but any ISP using Chorus gear has to use PPPoA.

I am on a Chorus cabinet down the road so will definitely be on PPPoA even though ISP is Vodafone. Installed Gargoyle on my existing 1043ND last night, was pretty easy really. Still wondering whether i should get another one or replace the existing one with a more elegant solution. I guess i can see the advantage of not having to use half bridge modes etc in the modem.

I have no doubt the drayteks are very good given all the recommendations I see for them, but an RTA1320 half bridged to 1043ND running gargoyle worked like a charm for me for months and was pretty easy to setup (just make sure MTU is correct!) and you can get them from trademe for around $5-10. YMMV but worth considering ;-)

I have picked up an RTA 1320 off Trademe now for $15 inc shipping and will test that out. If it causes many issues i will probably just get a Vigor 120 and use that instead. Now just have to figure out what to do about the Rumpus room, get another 1043ND or another solution.

Half bridge is a bit more of a hack but it works fine normally, it's better than a modem/router and router in double NAT. Just keep an eye on the RTA1320 over summer, they have a reputation or running hot and dying. You can mod it with a cheap heatsink from jaycar or a fan (there is an unused 5v header on the board) if you can be bothered or just buy another one when it dies.

Cheers Ragnor, What would you recommend for adding extra gigabit ports and wireless access to a remote part of the house which doesnt get any wifi coverage at the moment, currently using the 1043ND with dhcp turned off on the same subnet as the all in one vodafone modem router.

Also is there an easy way to create a guest ssid on separate vlan using Gargoyle on the 1043ND? I can see on the net that it looks like you need to do some command line stuff, anybody done this before?
