Hi guys,

I've been reading a lot of threads on here about setting up the Vigor 120 fully bridged by following the instructions here: http://www.draytek.net.nz/draytek/support/passthrough/

I've set up PPPoE on my EA4500 router and it says an internet connection is established, but the connection is extremely slow on my devices. When I run the speed test within the EA4500 firmware it appears fine, but I cannot load any web pages on my laptop because the connection is so slow.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

In the meantime I'm just using the Vigor 120 to authenticate and connect to the internet itself, with the router in DHCP mode.

How are you connecting to the roiter, wireed or wireless? Never rely on a wireless connection for testing.

I've tried wired and wireless, but they both have the same issue.

Hi, lets first establish the which is the issue the modem or router. Lets try setup a PPPoE session on your PC directly to the Vigor, using the following instructions.

Hi Cyril, I already tried this but on OS X and the connection was established fine. I was able to browse the internet at normal speed.

I'm on Telecom and tried both user@xtrabb.co.nz and my user.xadsl@xtra.co.nz but there appeared to be no difference in speed.

Hi, points to the router config, what MTU setting are you using.

If it's of any use, here is the router's status

I'm getting speeds of about 6.5Mbps down and 0.65 up when using the Vigor 120 to authenticate. This seems quite slow to begin with, I'm in Auckland Central near Albert park and according to the Chorus mapping tool I should be getting >10Mbps.

That looks like the modem's staus page, not the router's.

Your throughput is in line with those stats - perhaps you also have a wiring issue affecting your sync speeds through?

With attenuation that high you're not going to speeds any father. You have a potential wiring issue somewhere that you need to sort out first.

31db and 7Mb/s is pretty good, but is the 31db, real, that represents around 2.5km of cable, which would be odd in that part of town now days.

Regardless, there is clearly an issue with the router, not the vigor. So you say MTU is auto, so that's the router you refer to, if so try 1500, or 1492 and see if that helps when pulling traffic through the router.

Actually re reading all this I am confused, so please explain, the speed when you connect directly from you PC to the Vigor using a PPPoE client setup on you Mac is ?.

And when you have the EA4500 connected and doing the PPPoE to the Vigor and your Mac connected as a normal lan member to the EA4500 the speed is?

The speed when connected directly to the Vigor is 6.5 Mbps.

When the router is connected to the Vigor some web pages do not load. I have just determined that some web pages do in fact load, such as telecom.co.nz but others do not such as Geekzone.

I have changed the MTU to 1492 and have added DNS servers to the EA4500 settings but with no change.

I've also just found that when the WAN cable is connected while the router is in PPPoE mode, I can also not access the router admin page.

So not only are some web pages unable to load, the router config page cannot either. If I disconnect the WAN, the config page loads instantly.

Have you got the lattest firmware in the router, it definitely sounds like a router issue, do you have another router you can try.

Yes, I have the latest firmware on both the Vigor and EA4500. Is it necessary to disable the DHCP server on the Vigor? I haven't done this but was thinking about trying it.

I have an old modem/router combo from Telecom I could try if it can do PPPoE.
