Okay - quick but important question!

Is it okay to install an unmanaged switch vertically? (model SG100-24)

And what about a small business router? (model RV042G)

I am guessing that it's fine for the switch but not the router.

I ask because I have to do an install in a VERY small area and I have to build a custom cage with built-in fans to put AV receivers and sky decoders in along with a few network components so anything I can put on its side is useful! It's going to be a 3D maze-cum-birds nest but there is no-where else I can install this stuff in the house sadly.

I wish I could install the sky decoders vertically but apparently the hard disks are made so badly that they can't be installed upright which is very unusual for a hand with disk!

I can't see any issue vertically mounting that.

I have my Draytek Routers upright in a stand in our cupboard.

The only concern would be cooling and most things stay cooler when mounted vertically as warm air likes to flow from bottom to top, so you are exposing the largest surface areas to constant passive airflow.

I guess there would be some ventilation holes at the top when you have it in the vertical position? Then should be ok.

If you get a bit of airflow within the space you should be fine.

Those fans out of desktop computer power supply units are great for providing airflow to keep electronics cool.

I made this gadget to blow cool air into my cordless drill battery charger. Keeps it from overheating even on the hottest days:

Jaycar have a temperature controlled relay kit that I use to switch fans on inside media cabinet. Saves running them 24/7 but keeps from overheating.
