Hi I currently have a vodafone Hg556a, we are experience random frequent very short dropoffs in our connection, normally only noticed when -conected to a remote desktop (where it drops the connection and then quickly reconnects), -outlook when connected to an exchange causing outlook to crash/hang -and torrent speeds to randomly drop and then start again -skype some times drops off It is not our wiring (coffeebaron installed master splitter and most of the wiring) It is not the computers -two separate computers both on wired connections It doesn't appear to be Snap. they ran a 24 hour monitoring thing on the connection and didn't detect any fault Our requirements are -Rock solid connection, I use remote desktop to connet to my school, my partner uses outlook exchange and skyp all day -strong wifi signal -gbps ethernet ports would be nice -and did I say rock solid connection? We don't want to spend a fortune, is the fritz box worth $345 or is there something better for the price? Cheers james

The Fritzbox is worth every cent and super stable. Edit: only 2 GigE ports on the 7340. 7390 has 4.

Talk to Snap they do a good deal on them to new customers , they might be able to help you out and the Fritzbox is fantastic never drops out, my record is 6 weeks of connection before i stopped it to reset it

Currently with snap and they have said $345 for the fritzbox and I don't know but $345 seems pretty expensive when looking at price spy and there are so many in the $100-$200 price range

Yup Fritzbox will cost you 345 for the 7340 and 390 for the 7390. Look at the $100-$200 models and see if they can do this... ADSL, VDSL and ethernet WAN and 3G backup 2.4 and 5Ghz wireless with guest isolation and access controls NAS capabilities PABX capabilities, PSTN, ISDN and SIP trunks. 6 extensions, dial plans etc. 6 DECT station - connect your GAP compliant phones directly to the Fritz VPN server And loads more. It is a very good router.

PBX functionability I get, we won't use but get it mobile phones as SIP devices as a skype user how would this help? BRI? ISDN? I am interested in the NAS feature. Does this mean I can plug my NTFS drive in and share it in a similar way as I can through windows?

Dual band refers to wifi being able to operate at 2.4GHz and 5GHz (although some devices can do it at the same time and other devices (like the 7340) you have to pick one or the other). If you do have the fritzbox hooked up to the phone line (either analog phone, or if you have a phone line run over the internet), you can use a mobile phone connect to the fritzbox (over wifi) to make calls using the landline hooked up to the fritxbox.. you could also answer incoming calls using the mobile using the frizphone app (or probably any other SIP app) If you are like 99.9% of other home users, you don't need to worry about BRI or ISDN. To be honest, if you are not going with VDSL2 I would have thought there was a better suited device for a lot less than the fritxbox. I have seen one from TP-Link recommended before but can't recall which model.

I've had pretty good luck with a Draytek Vigor 2710ne. Around the 200+GST mark I think.

You may not need the PABX features now but when UFB gets to your door you would probably quite like to. It ia the kind of thing you would use if you had it. If you dont want the fritz then get a crappy router with ethernet wan and use a draytek vigor 120 to pick up the adsl. Probably the most solid adsl modem around.

It might not 100% solve the issue, especially going through your details, but have you thought of trying a UPS? We've got a HG556a and it's been rock solid ever since we got a UPS, similar line stats, also with snap, and use all the programs you've listed except via wireless - no LAN clients. Main reason I got the UPS was because of VoIP but I think it also filters out a fair bit of the harmonics and cylinder switching stuff the network companies inject into the lines as I can recall we would have daily drop outs around 3 - think due to power line carrier (hot water circuit switching). Might not solve your problems, but it's worth a shot I reckon, plus you'll end up with a UPS
