Hi,

Does anyone know of a website response/up-time monitoring service that can test response times from NZ for a NZ hosted site? Ping times from the US are not as important to me.

Cheers

Would be surprised if there were any NZ based ones.

I use Pingdom for status.geekzone.co.nz. Shame they don't have a New Zealand probe.

[On a different note, I am going to start disabling the quote functionality for people who quote the OP in the first reply).

Is response time really that critical you need to monitor it constantly? If not then just use a USA hosted service. Alertra's good, but there are free ones you can use as well that are fine, like pingdom.

Pingdom is only free for one domain though.

OP only asked about one site.

Thanks I'll check out Pingdom.

A NZ probe is not crucial, I had thought there might be services out there though and that ping times within NZ would be more relevant for an NZ hosted site targeted at NZers.

Ping times are irrelevant for user experience. If you want to know what users are experiencing when loading your site in the browser you want a service like Torbit instead.

Pings are really only good to let you know your server is responding. If you want to know if the web site is alive you have to test http requests and specific responses. Read up on RUM (Real User Monitoring) for more information.

Maybe it is a good idea to have a reply button next to the quote button to improve useability . The quote is there for replying to the exact point that is being made, whether that is a cropped quote etc. Without it you don't know what is being replied to which will name it confusing for people reading. Also I can see a lot of people do this.

There's the quick reply box at the bottom of every page. No need for a "REPLY" button unless you want to use the editor, in which case there's a LARGE "Compose Reply" button.

That would be true if people quoted the point being replied but people are quoting the entire post, cluttering pages.

Maybe it is the quote button that is in the wrong place and should be a with the reply button at the bottom. I normally don't see that buttons at the bottom, not sure if it is the colours or what it is. Or maybe because they are in the grey line and above the advertising, and they get lost in that area. I would crop if a long quote and just quote the main point but in this case it was essentially a single line.

But this is a worse example http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=141&topicid=112517 and I have seen far worse.

I guess disabling the quote button for the first post could be an idea, as that is the post that everyone is referencing if they are staying on topic, and you get people quoting the OP further down the page with the full first post requoted which is just as bad.
