Hi - I have an older 500gig external hard drive. The power adater (if that's the best word for it) has a round 4-pin plug - I think it's called a DIN plug. Basically I need a new one ... but I can't find anything quite like it and I don't really know what to ask for. Photos below should make it clear.

thanks for your help.

Cant help you with the plug but if you can't find one, you can pull the external drive out of the casing and either install it into a pc or put it into a new external usb enclosure. A new enclosure will only cost you ~$40.

Have you looked at getting an ampty enclosure and swapping the drive into it?

Here's one I just googled up: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=ENCWEL0749&name=WELLAND--ME-746E--3.5-SATAUSB3.0-Enclo
for $45. It may be cheaper than finding a new specialised power adaptor.

Less advisable than what garvani said is to find another power source with the same rating and simply cut off the original plug & bolt yours on.

Excellent advise. I was probably going to have to spend that much on an adapter as you say. I shall go get a new enclosure.

cheers

@kiwitrc - amazing website! I think the adapter I need is in there somewhere but will cost more than a new enclosure so that's the route I'll take ... thanks again

One more thing ... can someone let me know if the drive I've removed from the old enclosure (photo below) will be compatible with an enclosure like that suggested by trig42 above ( http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=ENCWEL0749&name=WELLAND--ME-746E--3.5-SATAUSB3.0-Enclo )  ?

thanks

No. You need an IDE enclosure. Not a SATA enclosure.

Incompatible plugs/sockets between the two.

It looks simular to something I bought a while ago on trademe. I have the same plug. Have a look at this auction, the plug itself looks simular.
