While we're overseas, we've been using a camera connection kit to copy photos from our iPhones to the iPad, to free up space on our iPhones.  But now the iPad is starting to fill up, and we've got access to a PC, so I figured I could copy photos across to a USB thumbdrive from the iPad.  However, when I connect the iPad to the PC, it doesn't show any photos in the DCIM folder.  I figured this was because the photos are in the "All Imported" folder, rather than the Camera Roll (it's a first gen iPad, without the camera).  So there doesn't seem to be any way to copy photos off using Windows.  And that's okay, if a bit frsutrating.  But now I'm starting to worry about how I will get the photos off the iPad when I get home.  Will iTunes allow me to copy photos from the iPad to the PC, or will I need to use a third party app to do this?

I've been involved in a lengthy discussion on a US iPad forum, I was the OP.

I will check the posts now to summarise, but the short story is:

Photos taken on an iPad or iPhone, go to the Camera Roll, which is easily accessed in Windows. The others (synced in Windows and imported via CCK) go to album folders, not accessible.

Third party Windows apps can access everything, I cannot recall what one I found that looked good, that is probably the best option.

Will have a browse on the threads now and report back.

Can something like the flickr app access them so they can be uploaded off?

Uploading isn't an issue. We can upload via Skydrive app, but there's several gigs, and even with an AYCE sim card, or the hotel wii, it's going to take forever. Hence why we want to save to USB.

What about an app like wifi photo? (makes a web server on the phone so a pc can download photos).

An app like filespp and diskaid on the pc help solve your problem, with them you can browse the entire iPad file system

You can use an app like "Photo Transfer App" Thats easy to use. Its FTP.

Tipard Ipad to PC is a Windows software. Comprehensive, accesses everything. Its a little clumsy as the Image option shows all my albums in no order, but works fine. I just tested the trial using my 4S. UI needs tidying etc but it works

No doubt there many options, in iOS apps or Windows/Mac software

Diskaid looks ok, but while I have many photo albums, they dont appear in Diskaid. Instead I get 10 folders labelled 101SYNCD etc, insode them are images but no album structure

I personally find Photosync really good, although I'm not sure whether it would work on a Windows computer.

It seems if you import using CCK and the camera connected by USB cable, your computer cannot see the photos. Just as they cannot be seen if they were synced to the iDevice. Only the Camera Roll is visble at least in Windows Explorer.

But if you use the SD card in CCK, they are visible

Damn. I bought a third party CCK which had a USB connector for importing photos, and an HDMI port for displaying video on a TV. The genuine article, of course, has an SD slot instead, which would have made life much simpler. That'll teach me for trying to be cheap and/or clever...

In case anyone's interested, when I got back to NZ last week I hooked up the iPad to my computer, and was able to see all the images in Windows Explorer. So problem solved, without having to use iTunes or a third-party app. No idea why the computer overseas wouldn't show me the files, but it doesn't matter now. All sorted.
