I don't think that ad is a fair comparism, and apple could probably do their own. Build quality for a start I think is higher with better exterior materials. The iphone obviously has a lot more features. eg the new panorama feature. Many of the so called extra features on samsung list, I wouldn't have a clue on what they do.

Panorama 'feature'? Do you mean the one that existed in samsung galaxy nexus since last year? Have you heard of Pano on android?

yes but thats a third party app. could you also get that for ios through app store.

i have a galaxy s3 at the moment but to be honest the only feature i have used is direct call

Ask a random iPhone 4S (and 5 eventually) user on the street,  to list all the features on their phone, most won't know either, That won't change the fact that the S3 has more features.

- Telstra HTC Touch Pro2 - Energy ROM WM6.5.5 20 Oct/Cyanogen Mod Froyo 2.2 - R.I.P
- AT&T Galaxy S Captivate 16GB on XT (now with brother)
- Samsung Galaxy S2 on XT- Runs ICS 4.0.3 Resurrection Remix 9.2
- Business Hours - Work In The Electricity Industry, After Hours - DJ/Turntablist - Will Scratch Vinyl For Free'
- What's next??? S3?

NFC (near field communication) - touch to pay eg: Snapper

Smart stay - the screen will remains switched on while you are reading long article

S-beam
- tap your phone onto other phone to share files

Share shot - before taking photos, you can connect your phone to other phones. once you take your photo, this will appear in those phones connected to you

Group cast - whatever pic you view on your phone, will be seen on the other phone as well

Direct call
- you receive a text and want to make a call to that person. just put your sgs3 to your ear and it will directly put the call for you

Smart alert
- if you miss a call/text, once you pick up your phone it will vibrate to alert you

Tilt to zoom (self explanatory)

Palm swipe capture - swipe on your screen will take a screenshot

Palm touch mute pause
- you can silence the phone with your palm?

Picture in picture - pop out the video, you can reply a text/browsing etc while having the video playing on the screen

Turn over to mute (self explanatory)

The thing is how well do all these features actually work? The demo I saw of the iphone pano looked nicer and less fiddly, and appeared to process it alot faster.

The thing with apple is that the software that they include is usually pretty rock sold and reliable. They don't want people to have a bad experience so I think they would rather leave things out, than include things that aren't quite there. The way it's camera works for example is something that was the best in it's class a few years ago when it was introduced , and other manufacturers have replicated.
I expect the panaroma app to be the same, and better than other apps out there. The one thing perhaps that didn't live up to expectations is siri, but that has always been in beta, so is probably a sort of excuse for it not working as well as it should.

I am not a fan of how apple didn't put the best processor and camera into the new ipod touch. In the past they did actually put the newest and fasted processor into the ipod touch. But this time, after several years waiting for an upgrade, they have put in the old processor from the iphone 4S/ipad 2, which is 18 months old now. For the $600 price tag of the 64GB one I think it deserved the new faster chip. Especially as they didn't include any 3G data connection options with it. I mean that is now nearly the price of the ipad 3.
I just wonder how they are going to price the ipad mini. As it looks like it maybe around the same price as the ipod touch. Perhaps that is the reason they didn't release it now, so that they can get some ipod touch sales in.

Also i think the reasoning for not increasing the screen width, and only the height on the iphone, is a bit weak, as it all depends on someones hand size. And if they did increase it's height, I think they could have reduced the overall height of the device, so it wasn't so huge lengthwise. It now visually looks a bit weird, as it has lost the golden ratio. It really comes across as a compromise to me.
I think the screen size on the larger android phone is still better and more usable, although I think the IPS screens on the iphones/ipod touch are far nicer. I also think apple do need to look into introducing widgets/tiles, as the icon look is looking very dated.

[edit: drafted prior to the above post, it was not intended as a direct reply, many good points in there]

On a feature comparison basis there has been no reason to buy iPhone since the 3G. Apple still had the only decent fully functioning and robust touch screen at 3G and a few other features which just worked better.

But even at the 3G iPhone did not have well used features common for years on every other phone - like video calling. Still camera was not impressive compared to same class. Market adoption of the 4S is obvious. Features have little to do with Apple's current success.

The news discussed is not that iPhone has feature x compared to other phones - the news is iPhone now has feature x and how this will affect the ecosystem overall.

edit: Are you implying that other companies promote features that dont work?

This shows how good is Apple at their marketing.

I don't get exactly what you are trying to say with that picture.

No offense intended, But what the ... is all that about?

If you are trying to make a point about Apple's marketing there are better ways to say it I'm sure.

This is a discussion about iPhone 5. My post with the ad was a heads up for what's coming tomorrow to newspapers in the US in a last salvo against the iPhone.

Use this other thread for an in depth Samsung vs iPhone discussion.

I would actually say Apple marketing kicks butt. The fact that people are going to buy it without even knowing the features says a lot about the product.

That youtube video of the people on the street being shown the iPhone 4S (but being told it was an iPhone 5) and they all said they would buy it shows the power that Apple marketing have.

I think thats a bit of a generalised remark, most people would have gotten iPhones because the hype around them was maybe so much that apple could not possibly f-up on this. They're a pretty well trusted brand, and with sales like theirs, who wouldn't trust their phones?

There are people who buy them soley for these reasons, i agree, but for the most part, I guess people just have higher priorities. I chose Apple over Android for a few reasons, less fragmentation (Going to get updates for atleast 2 years after buying the phone, android you're lucky to get 1 decent update), safer OS (Apps cannot interfere with eachother or the core OS officially, android apps can mess the phone up pretty damn badly) and the premium feel, (most android phones are plasticy, horrible feeling, apples phones usually feel premium, with nice quality parts and finishing). Thats my view point on it, and I'm not even going to lie, I'll buy that phone because it is a hot looking phone, yes it is similar to my iPhone 4S, but its just nicer all round, industrial is hot. Yes I look at core features, most I can't live without now, such as iMessage, love it to bits. iCloud is just fabulous, and camera experience is just ebtter than I have ever experienced on any other phone, maybe thats because I'm used to it, but thats what I feel right now.

Feel free to argue with me on that but in all honesty, I don't see my self using another phone until the market produces something I actually want. I don't want plastic phones, I had those as a child. I want to know my money is going to get me a top product. And, no matter what people say, everyone knows the iPhone is still at the top of the cellphone food chain, purely down to marketing.

Speculation today that Lightning will allow USB hosting. That would be nice but I cannot see it being broadly enabled. Apple tends to tie things down to specific planned uses within the ecosystem.

My feeling is Lightning will enable new kinds of Apple accessories and device interfaces but not much around the usb.

I'll be buying an iPhone 5.

Personally I want a great phone, and I have no doubt the iPhone 5 will provide that. Is it the best phone? I don't know. I don't really care if the Samsung S3 is slightly better on some specs. I'm sure they're both awesome phones, and both will be a big jump up from what I have been using. I'm sure Apple will provide a smoother, more polished experience though.

I do have a major beef with the Android updates though. I've currently got two phones, an iPhone 3GS (running iOS5), and a Samsung Galaxy-S running Ice Cream Sandwich (CM9). Both were decent phones when they came out. After six months (when the S2 came out) the Galaxy-S felt like Samsung's red head stepchild, and looked like no chance of ever receiving updates, so I had to resort to custom roms (so I could get features I needed in later Android releases), which was a painful experience. On the other hand, Apple updates arrived for my phone as the same time as their later models.

I'm sure it'll only be a few months and we'll be starting to seeing rumors about the Samsung S4, and then we wont see any more updates for the S3. Meanwhile 2-3 years from now Apple will still be providing updates for the iPhone 5.

Looking at this I might get the iPhone 4 when it drops in price. For me they were the perfect size. I personally can't see the appeal for these large screen phones.

iPhone 4 has already dropped to $599 on the Apple Store and you get quite a lot of phone for your money. I'll probably get an iPhone 5 through work as we're a Mac house and they like to have us on the latest tech but if it was my own money I'd grab an iPhone 4 because frankly the 5 isn't worth $500 more.

I do like some of the Android phones and if I didn't already have a heap of Apps on my iPhone that I used on a daily basis then I'd be very tempted but none of the features are enough to draw me away from my iPhone. It doesn't have the best tech or have the best features but it does what I need perfectly well so swapping would just be a pain.

alasta: It's interesting that Australia has TV shows available via iTunes. I always thought that was strictly a US thing, so I guess this means that TV shows are starting to spread internationally?

Australia has  had TV Programs for a few years on iTunes but it's the same old junk that's already been shown in Ozz not new stuff from the US or UK
