Did some calculations, and despite the handset discount on the Vodafone $100 p/mth plan (which PC World worked out as the best value), it's still cheaper by more than $500 over the 24 months to stay on my current plan and buy a handset outright. I'm not willing to take that big a hit just to get the phone earlier, so I'm either ordering from Apple or marching into the first place to offer handset-only sales. If it weren't for the 3GB data I get on my old VF plan, I'd be tempted to jump ship in protest of them being greedy so-and-so's. I wonder if they'll end up with sales being less than anticipated because people (like me) are balking at the requirement to sign up to their plans?

Carriers make money from long contract plans not selling phones. More so in the case of Apple's phones. Way back Apple essentially convinced carriers to take less on the phone sale to get high profit customers.

They will hold plan only for as long as they can.

If anyone thought it would be different for a major release like this, well you were dreaming really.

[Edit: But existing customers should be calling Vodafone directly and see if they will move for you. They have a retention team dedicated to resolving these issues]

Oh, indeed, I have no doubt the margins on the phones are small. My gripe is that I've been on a Smart1 contract with them for years - one that I am most happy to re-fix for another 24 months because it's more suited to my needs than the new ones, AND pay the full handset price on top. Do you think if I gave them a call they might consider it? Or am I better off going into a store after release date and negotiating with them? I really don't want to wait the "several months" some people are suggesting for handset only sales when I've been on a contract since I got my 3GS.

I have no inside knowledge but definitely give VF a call. The 'retention' name indicates the team is aiming to avoid a situation that sees you moving to another network.

ricky1981: Called Yoobee, they are expecting some stock but first come first served next Friday.

I called them too, however, they are pretty sure the handsets will be subject to the same deal as at a vodafone store... ie. Contract only.

So that begs the question, where can you get this thing without a contract?!

We have our own customer retention team at work :) I'll give them a ring, see how far they'll go to keep me on my measly $40 per month contract. If they won't let me order a phone under those circumstances, then I'll just buy outright from Apple when they offer the handsets and carry on as a non-fixed customer who can jump ship at whim.

If you do buy outright from Apple, you still have to somehow buy a nano-sim?
Can you still do that?

Any advantages from buying from Apple rather than an ISP? Better/faster warranty support would be about all?

You don't get mucked around with requirement to buy the phone with a plan.

Not even the warranty.  Apple's so rear-end-retentive around customer experience that it doesn't matter where you get an iPhone - they'll even provide warranty support to stolen iPhones.

I've got to say, they're excellent about that. I have a 30" cinema display on my late husband's Mac Pro that was just out of the 3-year AppleCare warranty, and they were willing to replace it for free when it stopped working on me. Then I discovered the power button (don't laugh! - I was used to an iMac where the screen went on and off with the computer).

I think I've decided to buy from Apple, and just wait for however long it takes. I really like the thought of staying on my current plan (which is no longer fixed term) but being able to move to something better if it comes along, or to upgrade phones more regularly without worrying about break fees. What if the next one turns out to be the one that revolutionises smart phones? ;)
