Buttonmash: I don't want to sign up for 2 years, so this is turning into an immensely frustrating week trying to work out the best way to ensure I get a phone as early as possible.

Best bet is apple.co.nz or if you're really lucky Yoobee. But I hear they will be subject to the same deal as if you walk in to a VF store. ie. on contract only.

visionarymedia: I'm guessing that with the pre-orders, once it's confirmed, that means there is a device put aside for you. So if I go in on Friday morning my phone will be waiting. No need to get up at midnight.

Exactly. Great plan but I'm gonna go for the fun. AHA (and possibly for the freebies). I remember good times at the iPhone 3G Worldwide launch. Vodafone really went all out for it.

I feel your pain. I've been a Vodafone customer for at least 12 years, but because I want to stay on my old Smart1 plan, I don't get to pre-order. I see Vodafone and Telecom are either all out or mostly out of pre-order stock already. I'm just going to order from Apple and it arrives when it arrives. I'm trying to be zen about it :0)

Called Yoobee on saturday. Unfortunately their first batch is on Vodafone contracts only. No outright purchases.

Sounds like supply is tight. I read last night that Vodafone only got 10,000 units for the entire country. And is anyone concerned about "scuffgate"?

Ha ha. I saw evidence of the scuffs etc, but at the end of the day, it does appear to be a more sturdy device than the SGS3, based on drop tests done on the net.
Not that this is any indication of real-world sturdiness, but it is interesting nonetheless.
I'd personally be gutted if I got a brand new device out of the box and it was scuffed though..

Ringing around trying to buy one outright.....looks
like everyone's lips are sealed!! Even all the Christchurch YOOBEE stores will
not guarantee the phones will be for sale outright. Dicksmiths have none and
won't have any for another couple of weeks, have not tried the Warehouse as yet.
Telecom, Voda contract only.
I am already on a contract with Telecom and
don't want to change.

Anyone had any success with ordering one
outright?

Just wait a couple of weeks for the supply to stablise and it will be offered outright as well..

Otherwise if you really NEED the phone on friday when its released then I guess you are out of option but to get into a contract or get someone else into a contract who can give you the phone..

Presumably we're going to get the GSM A1429*? But why is there a separate GSM model of the A1429 when the CDMA model supports all the same technology and bands of LTE? Shouldn't we all just buy an unlocked Verizon phones and have extra roaming ability in the states? Is apple just trying to save money by selling a watered down version in country where there are no CDMA networks?
  • GSM model A1428*: UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 4 and 17)
  • CDMA model A1429*: CDMA EV-DO Rev. A and Rev. B (800, 1900, 2100 MHz); UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz); LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)

I had a play with a couple of iPhone 5's over the weekend in Sydney.

A lot nicer than they look in the pictures I must say. Feel very nice to hold. Very light.

Still not buying one tho.
