My delivery time seems to have come down, but only by a few days.
Ordered 32GB Black on launch morning about 3:30am, delivery dates of 29/10/2012 - 02/11/2012. Checking now it has gone down to 26/10/2012 - 01/11/2012.
Still hoping someone will sell outright before then!

The hold on my CC was released yesterday, I have stopped checking my order and found something else to keep my mind off it.

The resellers have pretty good stocks (at least of the 16GB). I think the whole 'On Contract Only' thing has not worked for them this time around. I heard there was a bit of pressure from the resellers back to the telcos/Apple to allow them to sell outright.

I know a retailer I saw yesterday has good stock of both colours of the 16GB, and low stock of the 32GB and good stock of the 64GB (Black).

@trig42 yeah there must be only so many people who are in the position to sign up to a new contract. If you a correct with the stocks thing I'm surprised that resellers have to answer to the Telco's and Apple over this. If I was a reseller that would annoy me somewhat.

Resellers are sitting on stock, I was informed of their inventory stock, they just can't get rid of it at the moment on contract

I'm pretty sure it is annoying them. Bit of a rock and a hard place thing. If they bolt early, then next time a big release comes along (not just Apple), the telcos will not allocate them as much stock, if any.

So the resellers don't even "buy" the stock they just sell it on behalf for a small margin if any? Just to get foot traffic?

As of this morning: An employee at the Lambton Quay Telecom (the new one next to Adidas and the Verve) told me that they had "heaps" of stock of all varieties of iPhones, but that it was still 24 month contract only at this stage.

Quite frustrating that Apple allows this to happen by supplying stock at such high levels to the telcos - they are actively discouraging you from buying from their own store because of the 3-4 week wait, even though margins are higher when they sell direct to you.

Apple know that they have to maintain good relations with network operators, and in reality I suspect Apple are getting a backend fee from mobile operators that will offset any lower margins,

If it cost a network nothing/minimal cost to be able to offer iPhone's for sale, then why are 2Deg not selling them?

Apple will not be losing margin selling through Telcos

They didn't.  Credit card authorisations automatically expire if they aren't used within a period of time (7 days seems to be most common, though I'm uncertain if they can be changed).  One thing to watch out for is that once you receive the phone, it may be up to a week before Apple actually charges you.  And whatever you do, don't call them asking why you haven't been charged - they get all suspicious on you.

I can't imagine its Apple telling the resellers how to sell the phones!

Apple have given them a grace period until they themselves sell them outright....3-4 weeks.
The resellers are just trying to maximise their profit potential in the meantime.
