Given that they're trying to bill their PayPass thing as an alternative to NFC, that's hardly surprising. NFC is a "standard" - we all know that Apple don't like supporting standards unless they absolutely have to. (Case in point: Could've implemented a MicroUSB(3?) connector with MHL/USB-OTG support, went even more proprietary instead). Given that they're intentionally breaking compatbility with an immense back catalogue of accessories, the prices for the adaptors are pretty ludicrous, but still as expected. I wonder if companies are going to be more horrified at potential loss of sales or stoked at the potential of selling new devices with the different dock. I'm not the target audience obviously, and given the total lack of LTE support for the forseeable future in NZ, the only obvious advantage of this phone is a bigger display. Faster CPU? The 4S was hardly "slow". They've pretty much hit the limits of what they can do with the hardware without starting to add additional standardised features (which they'll avoid) - it remains to be seen what they can do with iOS 6 with the additional power of the device. Beyond that, it might be time for them to push ahead with the next big thing as beyond the usual sheep who have to have the latest iDevice, reason be damned, I don't see a lot of people "upgrading" to this unless they were waiting to upgrade anyway. Oh I know Telecom have LTE hardware in place already and I guess the iPhone5 would be a good flagship phone for them to launch it on. Neither did the iPhone 4S, yet it sold by the truckload. The likelyhood is this will too. I like it, might even buy one.

Companies are making money off their dock design, and Apple has never promised that they will not change it. If we all listened to the rumours prior to launch and knew there would most likely be a change coming, then surely they did too? I'm picking the dock / sound dock companies are foaming at the mouth to get their new tweaked products into the marketplace. As will the companies who will make the 3rd party 30 pin adaptors to suit the new phones / iPods. For me, the only issue is whether or not any new iPad's will follow suit?

Given that (from what I can see) the new iPod nano & iPod Touch also uses the new interface, it stands to reason anything they produce from now, including next years iPad iteration, will have the new connector. Wouldn't surprise me if they did a mid-season refresh on the iPad to just update it to iOS6 and the new connector. "You are" = "You're" - Not "Your". "They are" = "They're" - Not "Their" or "There". For me, the fact that most apps are going to run letterbox for some time is probably a deal breaker. I'm far too OCD to be OK with that. Standard to Retina was similar, but at least it filled the screen. There are still HEAPS of apps out there now that haven't been updated for Retina graphics Twitter: ajobbins

What "mind blowing features" are left to add to phones? Its been said by many that the hardware on modern smartphones has pretty much peaked. So IMHO it comes down to apps, os and whether you prefer a particular form factor over another. For myself I prefer aluminium and glass over plastic, I already have many IOS apps and an ipad\apple tv and don't really have any need for NFC. I'm also a geek so tend to upgrade just because its in my genes. 3gs->4->4s->5 "Political correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end." I agree. It is all a bit average. They could have gone micro USB like the rest of the world. If I was an Apple fan with a bunch of docks I would be a little annoyed. What about all those ipod docks at Harvey Norman? What is going to happen to them? Disappointed there is no NFC. It would have been great to have all the vendors supporting one standard. I wonder how this affects the HTC LTE patent? Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note 10.1, ASUS UX31e Ultrabook, Mysky HDi, 2talk
