The interesting thing about this is that the shape is different.

I know, the tech is nothing special, but iPhone is an aspirational product. Who wants 'last years' iPhone? Not many, if any.

It will have the fanbois lining up because they don't want to be seen with the 'old one'.

Apple isn't about the tech, its about the marketing. The 4S looked just like the 4 and plenty of people in the middle of a two year contract went; Yeah, I think I'll wait. Now, they are all going to upgrade so as not to have yesterday's new toy.

As for me the 4 just dropped under the $700 mark so might actually be a contender for my next upgrade.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

This could make for an interesting release!. It now appears the tables have turned in the Patent war

edit (Made the Link Tidy): Samsung, HTC to block US, EU sales of Apple iPhone 5 using LTE patents

the change in screen size will be interesting. I suppose it means devs will now have to start making even more multiple versions of iphone apps to support the different screen sizes.

the start of 'fragmentation' maybe?

No doubt there will be fanbois with that mentality, but not all of us are by any stretch. The tech is nothing special, but if you do use the package of the hardware/software eco system, it is well put together. Actually, many buy last years phone and the one before that, so in many ways the Apple way is a very different model. I begin to think that they dont actually compete with others, as they could easily but dont seem to wish to. At the end of the day the buyer has many choices they can consider.

That will be interesting. iOS is already fragmented, but as thats a relatively low number of variations  and its all in house, easy to manage I guess. Well easier at least.

This whole patent war apple started is going to be absolutely terrible for consumers

I wonder if one of the 200 new features in ios6 is being able to FINALLY remove stock apps you don't want instead of having them cluttering the last screen or all bunched in a 'crap' folder *rolls eyes*

Considering how apple like to lock down its phone to users
Its their way or the highway..

I dont think it would allow removing stock apps.. If Apple thinks that the users need them.. then they cannot be removed...

There are many good reasons to buy an iPhone. On of the main things for me is that older models get the iOS upgrade. Android users are might get an upgrade if they are buying a phone that is six months old but they will probably only get the one upgrade if that, or risk custom ROMs.

I won't argue that iPhones are good, they are and specs aren't everything. To me it has always been about the price. I think an iPhone 4 under $700 might just be my next phone.

Fair call. Sorry if you feel I meant that iPhones are good (compared to others) The top tier phones are all good, S3, OneX etc. I cant really see hardware changing a lot, the OS is more the key now, although I still have S3 screen size envy!

I actually own an almost two year old Motorola Defy which is running Android 2.2. You know what? It actually  does all I need it to do. I don't do a lot of mobile browsing, 3G data is expensive; I don't watch video on my phone, I have a TV for that; I have an iPod which is a better radio/music player for me. The screen is good enough for reading when I want to. But is is a really good phone and it just works.

The S3 is very good and would probably remove the need for a tablet, but unless I actually needed it for work which I don't, $1000 plus or minus is too much for a phone for me. The OneX is also good but there is only one 'Best Android phone' and it's the S3.

I can't seem to find any measurements anywhere, admittedly not looking that hard, but is the iPhone 5 the same overall size as the 4s? If so that is exactly what I wanted!

It's 7 or 9mm taller but same width (Can't remember which). It's on the apple site somewhere
