Hi All,

I am investigating prices for the "new" Ipad 3 - 16GB Wi-fi

What I have found so far is

Auckland Airport - $634.00 NZD

Australian duty free - $600.64 NZD

USA - $588.00 + Tax NZD if I can't find one duty free.

My brother is travelling from Aussie to meet me in Hawaii so he could pick one up for me and I get it from him when he arrives in Honolulu, which would be 3 days after I arrived, but to be honest for $34 i'd sooner get it before I leave and have it on the flight!

Does anyone know how duty free works in the US ?

Are Apple's prices basically duty free and sales taxes are added at the check out?

If so then NZ gets a pretty damn good deal on Ipads!

I know a little more than nothing but not much...

US advertised prices are usually the price that the company is charging, Tax is extra, and given that taxes vary from State to state, city to city, and county to county, taxes are applied when you make the transaction,

There is no duty on electronics anyway. There is GST which, as the price of an iPad is well above the limit where GST is waived, will still apply on import.

Only if he had is posted,
As a traveller you have a $700 personal goods concession that a 16GB iPad would fall within, so no GST would be payable if he had it with him....

If you buy from outside NZ you won't be covered by the CGA. So paying that little little amount extra is a bit like getting an extended warranty.

I am tending this way as it seems like there is no real difference in price between here, Aussie and the US.

Plus it would be good to have on the plane to play with!

Not much connectivity in a plane to actually setup the whole thing though.

Do you have access to a airline lounge with free Wifi?, otherwise you will have to pay for it,
I am fairly sure there is no general free wifi at Auckland Airport.......

I have my iphone to tether to, or take the sim card from and put in the Ipad.

I am now looking at a Ipad3 wi-fi + 4G as I want it for maps etc.

Alternatively depending on the features the Ipad mini could work for me.

I can't wait for the announcement!

Shapenz: JR Duty Free

Thank you. I'd been on their Auckland site but hadn't seen it. Their main site shows them though. Cheers.

Another option is for your brother to buy it retail in Australia and then claim the GST back when he flys out, under the Tourist Refund Scheme:
http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp
This can be used by residents as well, and he can buy it up to 30 days in advance. If he bought at target for $499 AUD, this is $455 after refund or about $570 NZD.
There is still an issue with warranty if you buy this way, so depends on if that is a concern or not.

$539 AUD or $490 duty free, only a couple of $$ in it really. less than $100 for a 3g version.

Well, it is a little better than that, as you can get it cheaper from some stores. For example Target is $40 cheaper than full retail:

http://www.target.com.au/ipad/

The main advantage is that you get to use it and set it up before the trip. Well, your brother does. You should lease it to him for a month for a small fee! :-)
