All my contacts are alphabetical except for one. The first name of this contact is also not in bold text like all the other font in my contacts list
This one contact sorts itself by last name when all my other contacts are sorted by first name. I deleted the contact and added it again. , no difference. Running iOS 5.1.1

Is the contact in upper case of lower case? and what are the rest of the contacts in?

Same format as the rest, upper case first letter e.g Bob Smith

it puzzles me i cannot see a reason why it would be , unless it is some glitch in ios ?? don't really want to have to restore my phone and im not sure how i would install 5.1.1 again because i dont want ios6 on my 3gs

Are you synching your contacts with exchange or outlook? If so check the contact file in there that it's firstname, lastname display

no, i just used add contact in the phone , but for some reason it list this one contact alphabetically by the last name, depsite the fact all my other contacts are alphabetically by first name

Hi - I found this on the apple site http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11601, but can't find the setting on my iPhone, there are first. last settings under settings, contacts, right down the bottom - have you checked those?

thanks fixed it, it must of switched for some reason some how

this one contact still insist on showing part of the name not in bold text like the rest

The name in bold is the name you have chosen to sort by, ie first, last or last, fist.
If a section of the name isn't bold move that part of the name to the first name field in the contacts/or the last name field, depending on how you have it sorted.
