For those interested in getting yourselves an unlocked iPhone 5 while in the US.

Apple seems to be preparing to sell those unlocked online and in store from about... now.

16GB will be 649 USD. that is 788NZD. Th US price is exclusive of GST so by the time you add that on the NZD price is ~$900. that's about $150 cheaper than they sell for on the NZ Apple Store.

so a pretty decent saving if you are willing to forgo having any recourse to the CGA if stuff goes wrong.

so about $1000 + tax for an Iphone 5 64gb.

No a bad saving if you get in from a state with 6% or less tax!

I know a little more than nothing but not much...

This mornings NZ Herald has a full page Harvey Norman ad - iphone 5 available at $1029 each.

The HN website has black and white in 16/32/64GB models available for order. There is a possible stock delay note at the bottom of the page as well.

Have you added the state tax for those buying in store from where tax is collected?

Also remember if you send this via YouShop then you pay GST on product plus shipping, plus the Customs fee.

Might not be cheaper after all is applied...

Unless you actually go stateside in person and bring it back in your hot little hand you are likely to get slugged for GST and a customs fee when your iPhone turns up in the mail.

Even if you buy one in person while in the US, unless you make a false declaration on your arrival form, you're going to have to pay GST on it. $700 NZD is the cutoff unfortunately.

If this article is to be believed then it's not really "unlocked" in the traditional sense. Although it'll work on all compatible GSM and WCDMA networks, it apparently will only work with "approved" LTE networks.
