dickytim: BTW Siri is next to useless in NZ!

I agree, but is still a nice gimmick to show off to people, and some of the funny answers to questions. But is pretty useless once the novelty has worn off. BUt this technology is possibily the future once it has improved a lot.

riahon: DON'T go there if you have an ipad 2. Apparently there is an issue downloading the file and affects some ipad 2 users. It put mine into recovery mode and no way out via itunes. Had to download from another site then instal via itunes. Was worrying but I understand they are working on it.

I upgraded OTA on my iPad 2. Went through without a hitch. Has been working same old since.

tdgeek: Personal hotspot ok if tethering a windows laptop off it ?

Yes - tethering any laptop from personal hotspot is no problem - it's a great feature if you've got data you can spare.

Re. Siri - I find it useful for all sorts of general web-type enquiries - not always, but sometimes quicker to 'ask Siri' rather than go to Google on Safari or open a Wiki app. Also very useful to send hands-free texts or emails or act as a dictation tool to get your words into a note and then maybe cut & paste into another document, etc. Not always perfect, but I've been very surprised at the accuracy - not too hard to check over it and correct the few errors. I believe it's supposed to get better the more you use it.... I haven't had my iPhone 5 long so can't be sure... anyone know if this 'learning' is true or not...?

Certainly it seems that since iOS 6 the keyboard auto-correct is better - things like how it now separates words that you may have forgotten to put a space between (like 'whatis' becomes 'what is') and it seems to recognise grammatical mistakes sometimes like when you write a word that is spelt right but not correct for that situation (can't think of anything that seems to work on my phone now, but I'm sure it's better than iOS 5).

Cheers,
Mike

Hmm.. OK that is strange with my Mrs's iPhone 4 then - the Software Update options still only shown an update to IOS 6.1 beta 4...!

Was it on a beta release to start with?

No it was on 6.0.1 release version. I also thought that you can only download beta versions if you have an Apple Developer subscription - in any case I don't even have the Developer subscription so am puzzled as to why I am seeing that option.

I'm in the same position with my 4S.  I've been checking for a week now.  I'm not a beta tester or developer (to the best of my knowledge) and the beta 4 release is still being offered to me.  Everyone else in my office (mostly 4Ss I think) had the release version.

Kinda weird - maybe if you bought the phone second-hand the previous owner was a developer and the account is tied to the hardware...?

So there's an issue with Exchange calendaring resulting in massive load on Exchange servers during scheduling of appointments. Microsoft put out an advisory to premier clients to all disable iOS 6.1 devices from connecting to Exchange, so don't be too surprised if you suddenly start getting "Failed to connect to server" if you're using Exchange on an iOS 6.1 device.

I see the LTE toggle and I'm on voda. Anyone else experiencing intermittent network issues now? I often get the ph stating "no service" and then switching between gsm and 3G. Is it better just to leave LTE toggle off or will that affect my data speeds? Have tried a speedtest with both options and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Well Vodafone and Telecom only have LTE in veeeeery small areas of maybe one or two cities for testing - I would leave that disabled if I were you.

From forbes.com -

This is becoming something of a meme. It’s at least the third time in a row that this has happened: an update to Apple‘s iOS leads to users complaining of deteriorating battery life. Except this time we also seem to be getting reports of phones running hot as well. Try this complaint in the Apple forums:

1) I deleted ALL Exchange accounts on my phone.  The overheating and battery consumption went AWAY within 5 minutes.  I left the phone like that for about 3 hours.

2) I added back ONE of the Exchange accounts.  Within 5 minutes, my phone was hot to the touch and the battery was draining at a rate of 5 percent every 10 minutes (or so).

3) I have, once again, removed the Exhange account.  The phone is cool to the touch.

OBVIOUSLY, there is an issue with iPhone and the Exchange server settings.

At my last job they dispensed with the Exchange server for email and did everything through gmail. I had to set up a few iPhones for people, but, from memory, you still did it through the 'Exchange' option.

Now though, gmail has it's own app, and also a gmail option when it comes to setting up mail.

Maybe this will help -

I believe the new app Mailbox (which is slowly being rolled out and which is solely for gmail atm) is also very good (tho not sure how well it functions from a business perspective).

Experienced this with one of the manager's ipad 2. Was with him in the lunch room, he mentioned that the device told him there was an device update available but he was not sure how to do it? I went to settings, and started the OTA update via Wi-Fi and bam! restore mode! lost everything incl photos and videos. had never setup icloud and his sync machine's ssd had failed a day earlier and he had a new ssd in his laptop now.

did restore and setup him up with icloud first thing!

I don't see what this issue has to do with battery at all - did you even read what I said?

There is an issue where scheduling calendar appointments from an iOS 6.1 device can place extreme load on the server and potentially crash the email infrastructure.  Nothing to do with batteries at all.

My main gripe with iOS6.1 has been the reliability of the signal.

I have been getting constant switching to 2G and often difficulties with connecting to either the interweb or calls (and some undelivered txts) despite striong signal indicators.

I have done a little research and it would appear to be a common iissue on VF in the UK, but haven't really seen any other anecdotal evidence.

Anyone else experiences reliability issues since the upgrade?

The option is only available on a Vodafone handset because they're the only network about to launch LTE in NZ. The LTE option will not show on a Telecom handset since their LTE test network hasn't yet been approved by Apple (since it's only a handful of test sites from various vendors).

You won't see any performance difference with LTE on or off since Vodafone haven't launched their LTE yet.
