I fully expect to be flammed to hell and back for this but....

What is so great about the iPhone, especially the new one?

I have just brought a Glofiish X610 for $250.00, I love it, it is obviously a cheap low features item, and I know you get what you pay for.

Why would I spend $1000+ (I have no idea how much they are)

The limitations my Glofiish has that I notice, the music volume is crap even thru my proper headphones, but not greatly worse than my MP3 Walkman.

The quality of the speaker is not great, nor is the sound it produces.

The screen could be bigger.

The battery life is a little light, but I am still paying with it every 5 min, and the novilty of using the GPS on the way home from work still hasn't worn off yet.

So what makes someone want to line up in the freezing cold for the chance to purchase one of these phones?

[Moderator edit (MF): correct iPhone spelling]

I know a little more than nothing but not much...

I think you will find out the best feature on the iPhone is its user interface. I have been using Windows Mobile for years and neither Microsoft nor HTC (with its "TouchFlo" UI) or SPB (with its SPB Mobile Shell UI) or PointUI (with its PointUI shell) can compare with the ease of use of iPhone apps.

If the OS is better or not this is another discussion.

I have to whole-heartedly agree with this.. It's the one thing I say to people when they ask me how I find it - the interface is awesome.

The other thing I like, being a nerd, is that it's unix under the hood and I can do anything I like to it.

Makes a very good paper weight.

@freitasm - Have you used/seen the new Touch Flo 3D? I actually like it a lot and the Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2 start menu is just like the Iphone UI.

Within reason, yes. It has my full unix environment on it (shell, config, etc), and I use it relatively regularly for those unix features.

I don't faff around with the deeper internals for the hardware, but what I was getting at is that you can do almost anything you like with the hardware since it has been jailbroken at such a low level. Don't get me wrong, it's not the primary reason I like it, it's just cool that it can be done :P (that old saying "because I can" applies here).

All those "Start Menus" are a joke. Once you tap into an application you are back on the old Windows Mobile UI.

Even Android is more advanced in the sense that the entire UI - not just menus - can be customised.

On the bright side though, Microsoft is working on this.

And please, enough trolling...

each to their own I guess, I for one would never go down this track being a crackberry and winmo fan, lack of multitasking is limited at best and putting the onus on the developers is just .. hmm... painful?

^ I asked your opinion about the UI? How is that trolling? I take that as an offense. I am sorry but it's jut not fair to accuse someone in this manner.

I am (hopefully) getting an iphone 3GS on Friday to replace my WinMo phone. iPhone is by no means the best spec'd phone in the world, but IMO it sure as hell is the nicest.

For what I want to use it for (ipod, mail, calling, text, occasional movie and games etc) it does the job... and very well.

Sure WinMo has potential but, it sometimes feels like while 'whether it can do something' isn't the question, but rather 'does it do it well', is. iPhone just feels more well rounded, and complete.

The thing that Apple does very well is taking complex technology that was historically only appealing to geeks, and putting a slick and simple user interface on it to make it accessible to the 'average' user. Yes, you can get a better featured handset for less than the cost of an iPhone, but for some people user friendliness is a priority and they're willing to pay a premium for it.

oh, and the little matter of 50000+ applications available for the iPhone. Show me another phone where I can access Lexi-comp and then play a game of GTA or Brothers in Arms... OP, I might take your question more seriously if you were comparing it to Palm Pre or an Android phone, but winmo, seriously? It's like reliving windows 95 - on a good day, yoikes...
