OK so I wasn't going to do this but my curiosity got the better of me.

The GreenPo1son jalibreak worked flawlessly and I've installed the following apps which make the iPad now pretty much perfect for me:

1. BTStack wireless mouse and wireless keyboard - I needed this for when I'm out of the office away from my PC for extended periods. Without a keyboard and mouse its pretty hard to be productive on the iPad. Basically turns it into a small laptop when I need it. Cost mouse is free, keyboard is $5. Only issue is that the iPad becomes slow to respond on wifi at the same time. However it is normal when conencted to 3G.
2. Backgrounder. This free ap allows selective multi tasking when you press and hold the home button in app. Run Skype in the background. Awesome. This should be available with next update fro Apple.
3. Real SMS via SwirlySMS free - works just like a real cell phone should. Apple really should enable this as standard for 3G iPads!
4. Display out - display everything on the iPad (not just selected apps) on an external screen/projector. Cost US$2.99. Why isn't this standard?!?
5. Fullforce - display iPhone apps in full screen high res like a real iPad app. Works for mmost of them - free
6. MXTube (free) or Yourtube for downloading youtube videos to your iPad.

So if you have been thinking about doing this I would recommend giving it a go. If it all turns pear shaped you just need to do a full restore and it'll be like brand new again.

Interesting post. I have previously jailbroken my 1st gen iPhone, just to make it work in New Zealand. (and things like 5 column hack, etc).
I am really reluctant to jailbreak my iPad. It works so well, and I don't feel restricted, but when I see things like SwirlySMS... then my iPad really could replace my cellphone as my almost never make voice calls.
Also I am grumpy about the forthcoming Orientation lock changing to mute switch... as my iPad doesn't receive calls or SMSs, I really don't have a need for a mute switch. I use the orientation lock LOTS, and it looks like it will be several actions to perform the lock after the 4.2 update. Presumably this will be defeat-able via jailbreak.

Cheers,
Joseph.

Yeah MyWi is fantastic. However I have it on my iPhone 4 and share the 3G data on that with my iPad.

I can't see how Vodafone can justify charging $400 for the MiFI (note the spelling) for a $20 app that does the same thing on an iPhone.

Agree totally. Apple has forced the jailbreak community to find another way. I have happily paid the $20 for MyWi and it paid for itself in one month. I dont agree with jailbreakers using cracked apps. They can afford a $1000 iPhone but not a $20 app?

what? thats the dumbest idea ive heard in a while, my ipad is always set to orientation lock, its not a device i ever use on its side.  if it keeps flipping after this change i may hulk out and smash it.

i think im going to jailbreak my ipad now, swilrymms looks too cool to pass up, and then i can finally get txts from 2degrees about my credit running out.

Does the iPad not natively support BT keyboard/Mouse? I thought both it and the current iPhone did?

The bluetooth stack that comes with the iPad supports bluetooth keyboards. Mice are not supported in any form. You need to jailbreak the iPad to get a bluetooth keyboard and mouse working together. You never know, Apple might add bluetooth mouse support one day but its unlikely.

No it runs at the same speed. However I have noticed that a reboot maybe takes longer. I cant tell for sure as I haven't timed it etc but it justs feels slower to reboot. No effect on wake up time from sleep though.

Here's a link on how to add a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to your iPad. Works well:

It's not that I want to permanently disable the rotation feature. I use rotation lock quite a lot, depending what I'm doing. I very infrequently change the volume, and almost never turn it all the way down.

I almost always use my iPad in landscape mode. But for iBooks, for example, I only ever want it to be in Portrait mode, so when lying in bed it doesn't flip around into landscape mode all the time.
I'm just grumpy that a feature that I have good use for will be changed, with no option to change it back, barring JB.

Did you try SwirlySMS? I have been wondering if it works OK in the background, i.e. receiving texts when in other apps.

Cheers,
Joseph

SwirlySMS works without turning on anything else. Doesn't need backgrounder, insomnia etc. Once installed the iPad receives texts even when in sleep mode :)
