Multitasking works on 3GS but not the 3G.

Multitasking works on the 3G if you jailbreak and install backgrounder! :-)

iOS doesn't multi task - it app switches. i.e. pauses one app in favour of an other. Unless it is a preinstalled app (music player, calendar etc.)

Just make sure you aren't comparing a $300 android to a $900 iPhone, your never going to see a fair comparison.

Having used both I much prefer my Droid mainly because of the freedom to do what ever I like - showing my work mates a wicked feature that the iPhone isn't allowed to do.

That's not true. As of iOS 4 third party apps have been able to access certain APIs in the background while another app is running in the foreground.

I personally find it more than adequate for a handheld device, but I can understand that it might not be ideal for power users.

This thread was originally about comparing stock user interfaces. Which will boil down to personal preference.
However to stay offtopic, and clear up some misconceptions; you CAN acheive true multitasking on iOS if you jailbreak and use 'backgrounder'. I run an old iOS 3 turn by turn nav in the background quite happily on my 'old' 3GS.
Sure with ios4 compatible apps they will run select api while backgrounded. Which IMO is a clever implementation for a mobile device

ekud: You can still buy brand new 3gs, and by all accounts it looks like they will be updated to iOS 5

i dont think he is planning to fork out more than $600.

iphone 3GS with 8GB is $919 new

iphone 4 with 16GB is $1123 new

go figure

most rumours i came across, 3GS will NOT be upgraded to iOS5

Thats probably a good thing. When I put iOS4.x on my 3G, it was too slow to be useable and kinda wrecked it. It's a good thing I figured out how to flash iOS3.2 back on.

My iPhone was a fun device back in the day. it's very intuitive to use. Androids main problem is its usability. The back button behaves like a browser back button, so sometimes you're not sure where it will take you. I should be using the menu button a lot more I guess for clearly defined navigation. iOS is very nice for navigating between screens I reckon.

Also, the way iOS calculates which key you're touching on the touch screen keyboard seems to be more accurate on iOS than on any of the keyboard plugin's I've tried on Android.

On the other hand, Android seems to get data pushed down from gmail instantly.. whereas iOS had to poll periodically every few minutes? (someone please correct me if this is no longer correct). And I can have stuff running in the background at all times. Skype (although it has no video support on Android), Google Latitude, MSN as well.. etc. Which makes it a better communications device for me.

Another plus for Apple - their apps seem to have more polish. Possibly because you can buy an Android license for $30 bucks or so and nothing needs to be validated on the Google marketplace, and you can build your creations on anything, and it seems most people feel more at home with Java than ObjC.. so basically, no limits or restraints.. anyone can release anythingg, resulting in reduced quality.

(I realise you can make iOS software from non-Mac platforms too btw, but you know its geared towards Xcode on a Mac!).

For an average consumer who wants a good smartphone, I'd recommend the iPhone. For someone who wants a really pro phone.. well, that debate will rage on forever.
