I just noticed that Apple are recalling their first generation iPod Nano units due to a battery issue.

You can tell the first generation units as the ones with white fronts and metal backs. I just checked my girlfriend's unit and she is getting a new iPod for Christmas xD

To receive the replacement you'll need an Apple ID account (or to create one) if you don't have one already.

My sister has a 1st gen ipod nano and I saw the article on stuff and fowrded it to her, she went to the link below from the article,
http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano_replacement/

but she says the site always crashes before she gets to the end of the process, is there a NZ site for this issue?

The NZ site (http://www.apple.com/nz/support/ipodnano_replacement/) goes to the same form.

My 'box to send your first generation iPod back to Apple' is on the way according to Apple. 

Interesting that they will be replacing my first gen iPod with another first gen iPod but keen to see how it all goes anyway.

The worst that can happen is loosing my five year old iPod, not the worst outcome in the world.

there are pricks on trade-me asking sellers for their serial numbers.

Hi - Just curious as to whether anyone has had any progress on getting their nano replaced? I registered online back when this recall was first announced and had a confirmation email sent to me shortly after. As of Dec 6 I still haven't received packaging to return the nano (which is what I was told to wait for).
Anyone further ahead?

same here, had an email from apple saying I'd get a shipping box. Still waiting... not really in a hurry though.

My wife got the recall email a while back.  Got the box to return it in a couple of weeks ago.  She sent it off last week.... see how long it takes to boomerang back ;)

same boat here, helped a customer set up his unit to go back, he still has nothing back at this stage. Maybe apple will do one huge mass send out ?

@tangerz - that's interesting, thanks. So, just to clarify - did Apple actively send your wife a recall email as she had registered her iPod when it was first purchased? Maybe they give priority to people they contact directly, or maybe they have been inundated with claimants and have run out of boxes....?

Yeah Apple sent her an email as she had it registered.  Thought it may have been a hoax at first but on further investigation, found it was real and promptly filled in the form the email linked to.

The return packaging turned up about 2 weeks later, (maybe she was in early!).  Had bubble wrap, cardboard box with cutout and courier bag (from TNT).  Think she said it went to Aussie!!

whats up with all the generations of iPods? do each iPod do something different? I have a Shuffle, is this counted in the recall?

Hi - re. iPod models - yeah it can get confusing, but like all tech things change. Apple put out about 4 different models of iPod (shuffle, nano, classic, touch...) but each year or so they might change a feature/colour range/case design so if it's a changed nano it becomes the 'next' generation of that model.
This recall is only applicable to the first generation of nano (which came out after they stopped making the iPod Mini I think), so, no, it won't relate to your shuffle.

I submitted my ones details on the 19th of November and was given an Apple service request number and web link to track the progress. It's been a month now and it's still in "Service Requested" state, no box received from Apple yet
