I have avery old iPhone (4 years) I bought it before any were available in NZ. I use prepay smart with Vodafone

When I bought it I was advised not to accept updates because it was not designed to work in NZ. I have had it updated once but now think I will get a new iPhone ( might wait till the 5 comes out)

I would like to use the old one as an iPod touch - particularly for steaming music from spotify - so I don't have to use my iPad for this. But I can't down load the spotify app because the version of the phones os is too old.

Can anyone advise - do I change to the latest version - I won't need the phone function when I get a new phone.

I have searched the forums but have not found anything so I apologize if this has been asked before.

Thanks

Which version of the iphone 3g or 3gs? (what's the model number on the back of the phone - starts with an A) - which iOS version are you running?

By the way if you are jailbroken (which you most likely are) you can install 'installous' from cydia, repo is cydia.hackulo.us then you can search for old versions of spotify which will work with iOS 3

Hi - I presume your iPhone is a first gen device (silver/black case) - with a quick bit of Googling it looks like you'd have to put a 'hacked' version of the latest OS on your phone, which would then let you run Spotify over WiFi. Otherwise I think your phone will only let you update to iOS 3 via iTunes.

Yep circa 4 years ago either the orginial iPhone or the 3G - original stuck on 3.1.3 - the 3g can use iOS 4 which would work with spotify but you would have to re-jailbreak then unlock and need saved blobs.

Saved blobs are important when trying to to jailbreak a device not on the current version of the firmware, eg latest for 3GS,4 and 4S is 5.1.1 but if you try to install 5.0 as an example itunes will throw an error 'this device is not elegiable for the selected build' because apple will not allow you to install other than the latest firmware- there is a way around it if you have saved blobs.

Up the top of Cydia it has a line in green SHSH (eg. blobs) and all the SHSH's saved for your device.

Which device do you have and on which firmware as this may not matter to you.

The model is A1203. (black and silver)

Where do I find the firmware number?

so you've got an original iPhone which means that latest available firmware is 3.1.3 you can check this by going to settings > general > about and then look under version.

Can you check you springboard is Cydia there?

I have got cydia (didn't know what it was - never used it). But when I open it, it says 'loading data' and then flicks off after a while and the next time it just does the same

Should I remove it and reload it?

The version is 3.0 (7A341)

I used whited00r happily with my slightly less old iPhone (3G).

Get it at www.whited00r.com, it's customised firmware designed for old iphones

Adds stuff like multitasking and folders to customised 3.1.3 firmware, but I'd suggest running the configurator script after installation and switching off these features

Can't stress enough DO NOT ever remove cydia - you'll lose your network unlock making it nothing more than an ipod touch.

I've seen cydia behave in the way you describe. The only way I've found of fixing it was to create new custom firmware with the latest cydia.

Where abouts in the country are you?
