Hi there,

A couple of weeks ago I bought a brand new Apple tv, solely for the use of airplay with my wifes iphone 4 and my ipod touch. We have been having problems with the phone and the ipod with the airplay symbol disappearing. I've done many google searches and it seems LOTS of people have this problem, but I can't seem to find a straightforward fix.

This is what I have done to troubleshoot the issue.

Vodafone complete modem/router and all devices run on the same wifi network.
Updated Apple TV, and both phone and ipod run the latest ios. Router firmware also updated to the latest version.
Changed network authentication to mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK (As per suggestions on Apple website)
Changed WPA encryption to TKIP+AES (As per suggestions on Apple website)
Rebooted Everything including the router many times.
Home sharing on Itunes is turned on

Its driving me nuts that it works last night for example, but today no matter how many times I restart the ipod or iphone it wont work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My Apple TV was as stable as Uluru right up until the last update, now the network drops out all the time. I have to turn homeshare off an on or iTunes off and on, this also occurs during streaming which is somewhat tedious to the point I am considering replacing the unit with a WD Live.

Yes it had always been connected via Ethernet, until last night when I put it on my wifi network. Both ways have worked on and off. But so temperamental. Why can't these things just work!

We have both 2.4GHz and 5GHz of same SSID. Make sure both Apple TVs and iDevices are in same WiFi SSID. I had similar thing happened in the early days... but now my iDevices have no problem seeing Apple TVs.

I've had 3 different routers with our Apple TV's, iPad and iPhones. I recently had an E3200 Linksys one that gave me problems when the 5 GHz channel was activated. There was also an advanced setting called CTF that needing disabling (found lots of people having issues with AirPlay and the E3200).

I ended up getting an Apple Airport Express and now have no issues. I believe most of the time it comes down to the router when you have AirPlay issues.

I think your spot on that its a network issue. As there are litrally thousands of posts on the Internet complaining about airplay stability. I'm not in the position to buy an air port express, but I have also read people who use them seem to have fewer issues.

Oh right, I failed to mentioned that I have Apple Airport Extreme... hmmm...

As for other brands' routers, could it be enabling certain TCP/UDP ports?

Fresh restarts of the router and iphone or ipod can fix the problem sometimes. So it must be some kind of authentication issue with the router.

It just seems silly that I should have to reboot everything everyday to get it to work

I would try disabling the 5 GHz network if the router is dual band and only connect to the 2.4 as a test.

I used to have issues exactly the same as that with my DLink Router and an Airport express, cabled and wireless.

When the Dlink died, I replaced it with a TPLink and it has been rock solid since.

Also, try update to the latest firmware if available.

The router only runs on 2.4ghz and every device including the router is running the latest firmware.

Keep the Apple TV on your Ethernet network, you can still use airplay and it will cut down on wireless network traffic,

OK I will plug it back in. I thought for some reason if they were all running on wifi it might help the devices to see each other.

This sounds like a widely reported issue with iTunes 11 where iTunes will terminate home sharing when the Mac is due to go to sleep (based on the 'sleep after x minutes' setting in system preferences) even though iTunes prevents it from actually going to sleep at all. The temporary fix is to set the sleep setting to 'never'.

Back to the original problem, my experience is consistent with the suggestions that specialised Wifi features on Apple products seem to be hit and miss with third party routers. I used to have a lot of problems with wireless syncing when I was flatting and was forced to use whatever router was set up in the flat, but I bought the new Airport Express when I moved into my own place and have had relatively few problems in comparison.
