theres 5 buck ones on dx.com I use to turn on a light and other things for years now.. no problem with them.. the fit and rotate us and aus plugs and uk ones.(90 to 240volts). all in one but they dont have a ground may not be technically legal? as long as use them wisely and nothing too much load should be fine but can use any lesser used remote button to learn.. you click and hold the button stick on device and aim remote at it until it flashes and remembers the code

heres a new one that works through walls http://dx.com/p/rf-wireless-remote-control-ac-power-socket-ac-220v-500w-27126 heres the IR ones with learning function. http://dx.com/p/ir-remote-controlled-ac-outlet-for-appliances-220v-12902 the pins rotate so fits us or aus wall socket but you still need a small usa to aud adapter on device plug on i think its 500watts max but some have more or less ratings or just browser all http://dx.com/s/remote+power

A few similar suggestions in this list. Some of the home theatre standby eliminator type turn on using an existing tv/stereo remote. Energy saving and monitoring devices available in NZ: www.energymonitor.org.nz

The ones on DX work, they just do not comply with NZ requirements for safety/isolation. Just like LED string lights sold on TradeMe (also available on DX). If/when there is a fire, there is a possibility your insurance will not pay out. They will be in their full right to refuse payout, but I have see an instance where they did pay because the customer would have had no idea the product (a decorated panel heater) did not comply on the inside wiring. You can never have enough Volvos!
