Topic # 100173 4-Apr-2012 18:36 Send private message

Hi,

I will admit that I only briefly searched the forum for an answer but as I need a fairly urgent response, I though I would ask. Please excuse me if this question was already answered.

For a brand new house, what is the process to get the phone line connected to the street and an ETP installed? Who is supposed to pay?

I am about to settle on a brand new house and just discovered  that even though the 2 phone wires are setting together outside of the house (1 blue goes into the house, 1 black, from the street), there is no ETP.

I have tried to contact slingshot but they seemed unsure of what needed to be done.
If Chorus come and install the ETP, will they charge me? Any idea how much it could be?

Thanks,

Guillaume

Whats an ETP? If you are buying a new house, then it should come with everything you need surely? Otherwise contact the developer. All the wiring should be done, and all you should need to do is contact your provider to connect it. I mean thats what you would expect with an electricity connection. Also I think you have posted this in the wrong area.

Hi,

The ETP is the grey box that sits outside the house and connect your house internal wiring to the street.

Anyone else knows how much Chorus usually charges for that?

Thanks,

Guillaume

PS: Apologies if this is the wrong forum but I had a thorough look and this one seems the most appropriate. Please feel free to move it if required.

if the lead in is already there I would expect when you get the line connected the installer will put an etp on then. Someone has already paid for the lead to be put there.
I don't like leaving a nice clean white ETP on the end of a pipe at a building site as in 3 months it will be covered in sh!t lol.

I cant confirm either way, but i recently had a new one installed.
there is water in one of the copper pairs coming in from our street, and so in the process of testing it and damaging my pbx, the technican swapped over the telephone line to the spare pair, and also installed a new ETP box.

The house was built in the 80's and had an older style ETP box so he put on the new one free of charge.
The new ones have a small shelf in them for a master DSL splitter.

Hello,
As an electrician, I can confirm that the account holder wishing to obtain telephone service is to pay for this. It is supplied by chorus at the time of the installation/activation of your phone line. Make it clear to slingshot that a site visit is required, I've had a lot of issues with chorus just going to the cabinet especially if there was a house on the land beforehand - and not to the house to complete the connection.

We normally run the exterior cable to the street (usually because Chorus isnt available at the time the trench is open for power, water, gas and phone). They still need to put their ETP on outside the home. From memory the connection fee is around $145 for a new connection- but you will have to discuss that with Slingshot - the fee does vary.

Be careful!
Depending on where the house is, urban or rural, you could get charged about $500 to have the phone line connected!
Even with the cable already in place.

You could install the ETP yourself. I presume that the conduit and pulling wire was installed alongside the house. In theory Chorus shouldn't charge too much to do an install but if they are wanting a huge amount, just ask them to do an install to the mushroom, label the pair and then do the rest yourself (see my thread here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=98032)

Hi,

Thanks guys for the replies.
After I called Slingshot, I had a Chorus technician turn up the following day who said he was coming to install the ETP.

I will keep an eye out on my bill from Slingshot to see if/how much they charge me.

Thanks,

Guillaume

That's got nothing to do with it.
It's all about Telecom, or Chorus now, having to maintain telephone lines to rural areas so any new rural connections pay big time.
I tried to tell them that I could do it myself but they wouldn't budge on the price.
