my torrent client (Transmission 1.51 - Default for Fedora 10) has been freezing my G604T modem from time to time... so i'm wondering if anyone knows of any good torrent client program that i can use which would handle the problem i'm having, i don't think my problem has anything todo with the download/upload speed because i can download big files directly very quickly but i don't seem to be able to download using torrent. I think it is more todo with users pinging or making requests to my pc, can the number of requests be controlled? i know i can limit the number of peers i have been trying to download a 3.7GB Fedora 11 ISO during off-peak with no luck, i also download other softwares using torrents due to it's great speed any suggestions would be muchly appreciated

I knew before reading your post that you had a DLINK. From the experiences of others here, it sounds like you need to ditch the DLINK in favour of pretty much anything else. In a nutshell many low end routers simply can't cope with high throughputs or open connections. Use any P2P program that opens up numerous TCP/UDP connections and the router will simply crash. The easiest solution is to get a better/modem router. If you don't want to to do that the fix is to slash the number of supported connections until you find the limit that stops the lockups. i've been with Telecom previously and had no problem with freezing modem, i've had this modem for about a couple of years now... i might run and try the modem at my mates (Telecom ISP) and see if the problem persists...

Turn off the UDP stuff as well - thats had the biggest impact on making things not crash IME - so no DHT, and only foward a TCP port to the machine running the torrents. Richard rich.ms

Yeah DLINK's as mentioned are known to be overpowered by too many connections. Personally i suggest the bang for buck RTA1025w which is pretty good at handling torrents etc, just make sure you update it to the latest firmware as the older revisions arent as good.

Router with DD-WRT/openwrt and a vigor 120 is what you want... A little bit of setup work though :)

Aaroona: DLINK* products fail. I got rid of my 604T in favor of a Netgear DG634G router, and will NEVER look back. Dlink fail, plain and simple. I never had a D-Link router working ok. I do have a small five port swith here, but that's all. We only had two routers over the last ten years and both Belkin. The Belkin will slowdown if too many connections are open though, but it's quite a high threshold. I have a TopGlobal here too that didn't have this problem, but don't use it much because of some loop when starting it (I have to actually check for a firmware update). Mind you I use cable modem, Yeah, I had a 302G that was suppied by Telecom a few years ago - that was useless, and the heat that started to radiate from it was no joke. and then the 604T I purchased, I thought would be different.. but that was a waste of money.. at least I got it at cost price I suppose. but I am looking at moving to a Linksys router. This is a signature.

Aaroona: DLINK* products fail. but I am looking at moving to a Linksys router. I have a Linksys AM300 that has been SOLID for a year straight on xnet's fusion plan.. It's only got a single 10/100 port on it, but I have that plugged into a 10/100 switch which feeds the lan I torrent stuff (Linux Iso's (tm)) all the time, havn't had it blip at all.

A little bit of setup work though :) Probably off topic, but thought I'd comment on the vigor 120 in this thread since it's mentioned here (and the older threads are locked). For anyone who had a problem getting ADSL2+ on the 120, it looks like the solution has probably been found. It's not a firmware issue, or really an issue with the modem at all. The power adapter it ships with is 9V 500mA, which it seems is just slightly underpowered. I've had success using a 9V 1.67A regulated switchmode supply, or a plain 9V 1A adapter. I'm told 800mA is also sufficient. Now that it's got enough power the 120 is a great modem and very stable for me. Draytek and Snapper Net did a good job figuring out the problem.

Cool powderedtoastman, I am thinking of getting one but was worried by the adsl2+ problems, good to see the fix is so simple :) How reliable is the modem? The netgear i have at the moment occasionally dies and has to be reset...
