Thinking of switching to slingshot naked dsl and italk for my phone line. If I get a voip router and plug my phone in there -what can I expect as far as qualtiy and reliability? Will I notice any difference between the POTS line I have now and italk?

In an ideal world there will be no difference in quality. There are plenty of factors that can influence this however including your ISP, whether there is end to end QoS over the ADSL connection, quality of VoIP hardware and your choice of analogue phones. I can't offer any specific advice on the Singshot/iTalk combination as it's been a long time since I used iTalk (and I got rid of it due to the poor quality). *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Will I notice any difference between the POTS line I have now and italk? I have been using the Slingshot ATA with italk for about a year now. But using Snap Naked DSL. I successfully ported my telecom number to italk without any hassles. Its all working great. As for quality, there is absolutely no difference. In fact voice quality is probably better than it use to be. Reliability is great too.. Although in the beginning I use to have the odd disconect. But changing my DNS on the ATA sorted that problem out. The Slingshot ATA comes preconfigured as if you are using Slingshot as your ISP. Its only if you using a different ISP you may need to change the DNS settings on the device. Offense can never be given, only taken ...

would something like this work with italk? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Computers/Networking-modems/Other/auction-270186939.htm where would I get the settings to input? Slingshot website is very light on italk settings.

Should do. I have the linksys SPA-2102. The settings are not complicated at all. All u need is your new voip phone number, the proxy server (depends on your location), and password etc. You should get all of that once u register. Offense can never be given, only taken ...

That device will work and will probably work fine but I personally would not buy it - I'll explain why. There are several different versions of the PAP2 hardware including the original PAP2, a PAP2-NA and a PAP2-T There are a large number of PAP2 and PAP2-NA units that were sold in the USA by carriers such as Vonage who locked them to their own network. There are plenty of cheap units available ex Asia that appear to be those boxes that have been "unlocked" by reflashing the boxes which has lead to some problems, including some that WxC encountered that apparently had the same MAC addresses on multiple boxes. There are also some that may appear to be very good clones - if you look on ebay it's possible to buy these boxes for ~US$30 incl shipping to NZ. If you want to ever connect to the WxC VFX service they will only connect the PAP2-T model. I'm not saying this device is one of these or will have any problems but I wouldn't go near a PAP2 or PAP2-NA that isn't a NZ new device, the fact this comes with a USA plug indicates it's probably not NZ new. The PAP2 series is also quite old, the newer SPA2102 device is far superior. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

which is the device that slingshot sell and is that locked to their network? Can it be used anywhere else?

Not too sure if italk do have the Linksys ATA locked to their service but if they are then the reflashing that Steven mentioned above will set the box back to factory settings. From there you can put settings in for another voip provider like 2talk for example. I did this when I changed from VFX to 2talk.

Thats exactly what I had to do to change the DNS Settings, it was preconfigured as if Slingshot was my ISP, which it isn't. Had to change it to make use of the Snap DNS servers instead. I have it now configured with 2 VOIP Providers. Slingshot, and a South African VOIP Provider with a South Africa phone number which rings in my house here in NZ. People in SA that call me pay just local rates. Offense can never be given, only taken ...
