New Connection, unusual Phone Number

Hey, as the title says, I have joined SS for higher Data Caps, also got a new phone connection as for some reason they couldn't move my old number over. Now I live in Wanganui, our phone numbers start (06) 34* ** Yet this number SS have given me is (06) 927 **. When I rang about this the person was unsure as to whether it would be charged as a toll call for locals. Is this the case? seems a bit silly not having a normal phone number, and yes this is for a POTS line not for VOIP. Any one been in this situation? Yep, that's pretty normal. The 927 number will be in a block allocated to SS, while the 34 number will be a Telecom block. Can you not port the old number over?

Nope, as long as it's set up correctly by SS. You'll find if you go with pretty much any provider other than Telecom, the numbers start with 9**. They're just the blocks of numbers that are assigned to those providers initially. You can usually pay (approx $20 one off) to bring your original Telecom number with you if you choose. You'll probably get a few confused faces the first time you tell people your number, but it is becoming more common to see numbers in this range.

All sorted now. The number works great, call quality is amazing too :) Calls locally are free to and from which is great, got some puzzled faces when giving my new number :P All set with SS, internets quick, CSR's have been amazing. I originally had a 929-xxxx number in Napier with 2talk, but I was getting so many people confused by it and not calling it because they didn't recognise the prefix that I ended up get a Telecom number on Customer Link and porting it. All the Telecom numbers in Napier start with 83 or 84. One person even thought it if they called it they would be charged like an 0900 number. Was just easier to have a number that looked like it was normal. Twitter: ajobbins

Ok, so everythings been going great, one small niggle, not sure who's end this problem is, got someone trying to get hold of me using telstraclear for their provider, they just get some unavailable message, was also tried at another persons place who are also with TC, same message.
