How accurate are Slingshot's data counters?

For the past couple of months I've been running out of data in three weeks leaving me at 64kbps for the last week

I've been blaming my two boys who play a lot of minecraft and use skype (audio only) a bit - however I noticed that both of those still ran fine at 64kbps speed so they can't be sucking up too much bandwidth.

Anyway, my month rolled over on Saturday and I've been keeping an eye on my data usage. On day 1 it jumped to 2GB suddenly - I'm assuming this is the data I used in the last week when I was over my limit (Slingshot seems to transfer this to the following month)

I've installed netlimiter on all the computers to keep track of things.

It's day 4 now and I was at 12GB usage - however according to netlimiter, total data usage was around 4gb across the three computers (theirs plus mine) during this period.

The 12GB was at around 7pm - now it's 9:30pm and I've checked my data again and it's showing 15GB usage. This doesn't make sense as the boys computers have been off and I've barely used my computer (netlimiter shows 80MB used today on my PC)

The boys were using their ipod touchs and my wife was using her iphone but I doubt they would suck up 3GB of data in two hours.

My wireless network is secure (WPA) and I've checked the DHCP Client list to se if there's any unknown devices connected (there doesn't seem to be - I suppose)

My next step is to run malware and antivirus programs on all the PC's but I would have thought netlimiter would have picked up the traffic

Any other suggestions on what I can do to track down what the problem is?

I know they have had issues with their data counters before, but that was ages ago. It didn't last long and was quickly resolved. For me at least, they seem to be pretty accurate.

First scan all computers with your antivirus, as Johnr said, Malwarebytes is trustworthy.

How often do you change your WPA key and how secure is it? Swap to WPA2 security and see if the Ipod touches/Iphone will connect- I know some seem to have issues connecting to WPA2. If they don't seem to want to connect see if your router supports a WPA/WPA2 Mix. Change the password to the router every now and then as well. It is possible to hide yourself from the DHCP list by giving yourself a Static Ip address, though the chances are low- it's best to be on the safe side and change passwords every now and then to keep top security.

I have also had this. I used 40gb over the weekend. So ran out of data (150gb plan) with 8 days to go.

I have been setting up a new pc and downloaded a few steam games so I guess it works out. It just odd because I no longer torrent like I used to as I have been trying to cut back to a 100gb plan. But the last two months I have gone over.

I only download F1 and that is 7-10 gb per race but the season is over now. Just about all the rest of my data is youtube. What would 4-5 hrs of youtube at 720p be worth?

Would be nice if you could tell between upload and download.

yes why can slingshot show how much was upload and how much download? Even better a daily breakdown would show what days it was used.

Your wireless settings should have a screen for "associated stations" or something about wireless users showing each mac address.

Are you still having this issue? There are no know issues with data counting.

Are you using any Zero Rated data that you think shouldnt be using data (like isky).

I agree with checking wifi secuirty settings or checking dhcp leasing on your modem to see if theres any unusual clients on your network.

We do, have the logs of data downloaded and uploaded, every hour from your connection. We cant see what the data was in these logs. Just how much was downloaded or uploaded per hour from your connection.

If you want to check these logs, you can call our tech support to go over them with you or send you a copy to go over.

If you want you can PM me your account number and ill look into it with you personally.
