I got cold called by supposedly an Orcon staff member yesterday, and was told that they would be able to better my current ISPs deal.

After I told them the deal I was currently getting, they went a bit quiet, but said they could offer me less data, and one 'best mate' type plan (free national calling to that number) for slightly less than what I was currently paying. However I wouldn't say it was the better deal that they had advertised.

They also said that I didn't need to worry about breaking my contract with my current ISP, as 'they would take care of that'. I asked them to email me the plan they were suggesting so I could look at in depth, but I got the impression the guy wanted me to signup there and then. As yet I have still not received the details of their special offer.

Anyone else have this sort of cold call from orcon? Not sure if it is some form of scam by another party, as it was from a 'private' number, which suggest it could have been. There is no way of telling when someone phones you from a private number.

Everybody lies.

Just because they might be from Orcon doesn't make them an exception.

It was to a cell phone so it would have cost them whoever they were. But there isn't really anything apart from the withheld number to suggest it was a scam call. I suspect they probably couldn't better my current ISPs deal and couldn't be bothered following it up with an email.

Hi Matt,
I'm keen to have a look into this.
There's a few things that sound odd - we don't do a 'best mate' calling option for one.
Can you please email me some details?

Cheers!

The ?best mate? sounds odd, but they do have unlimited landline calling to all of NZ as an option, so it might just have been the way he explained it, trying to make it sound like someting you are familiar with if you have it on your vodafone mobile already.

Yes he called it something else, but said it was like a 'best mates' plan for your landline. He phoned me on my vodafone number so perhaps he thought I was familar with that.

Hi Matt,
Have messaged you. We have no record of calling you. All seems a little odd. Someone would have to have FAR too much time on their hands to pretend to be us ... not really sure what else I can check.
That said - I am sure we can offer you a good deal ;)

Sure they were't just phising for your credit card number? Be interesting to string them along a bit.
