Topic # 90371 20-Sep-2011 21:11 Send private message

Access to news.orcon.net.nz has not been possible now for over 24 hours.  I have notified support but it occured to me that Orcon may have ditched this service.  If so did anyone spot an announcement?

I dont think we have supported the service for some time.
I can take a look but i cant promise I can resolve the issue.

How many people here value such a service?

I have been using it for years. Its been down about 2 days (timing out). I emailed help and they said it was working fine for them.

I have a job open for it.

I'd stopped using the Orcon usenet service as the retention and completion was so bad. How was it behaving before it went away?

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat New Zealand as a Solution Architect for all things Linux, Virtual and of course Cloud. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Not uncommon.

I used to heavily use the usenet server on ihug (pre Vodafone days) and it was about as reliable as the Auckland trains during RWC.

Bring back Seeby Woodhouse.  As Orcon's founder he understood what Usenet was and was an occasional user.

I came to Orcon when Xtra turned off their NNTP server some years ago.  I understand that Usenet is not widely used but as long as I can find an ISP that provides an NNTP server I will keep moving.  If Orcon no longer support this service then I would be keen to see the announcement that I missed.

I will be taking a look at the usenet server today.
However it depends on what the failure is as to what can be done.

Ill let you know once i have taken a look as to what is likely to happen.

Dont thank me yet.
I need to take a good look at it as its not really running as it should.

It may bounce a bit while we investigate.

Its been all working fine since ptinson did what ever he did. I got this from Orcon on the weekend. It seems the helpdesk doesnt know what they run :-)

"I have looked into this for you and we no longer run or support the newsgroup server.

Feel free to email me back or give me a call if you have any other questions at all.

Thanks for contacting us.

The Team@Orcon"

I would not count on it being very stable though.

Because I managed to restart the server doesn't mean its operationally supported, it just means its running.
I am not in operations, I simply made an old server start again while we work out what we do with it.

Orcon have provided a Usenet server from day 1.  The original owner of Orcon (Seeby Woodhouse) was a sometime poster to nz* groups and Orcon also ran their own (private) newsgroups.  Posting guidelines for Usenet appear in the Orcon Terms and Conditions.

Can Orcon please confirm whether or not they support their Usenet (NNTP) server - news.orcon.net.nz?

Well Seeby cashed out ages ago and probably the cost of running the server vs the benefit for people who actually use it probably doesn't work out.

Is it in the OZone aka un-metered currently?

I have heard Orcon is planning to shutdown the NNTP server one more time, and it won't be coming back.

As far as I'm concerned it won't be missed.  There's nothing there any way on  binary.. Last time I looked at text groups they were few and far between as it was.. At home the total used over all my usenet servers for this month has been 5.25 Gig and orcon is .99Meg.  Not even 1 meg of download..

ISP realises NNTP is maibnly used for copyright infringement these days, so naturally they want to move away from this kind of thing.
