I thought I should start a new topic to highlight what I have found out, sorry if its old news but I think it’s great news for me. You can have the benefits of Genius without getting Genius i.e. unlimited internet and free national calling for $99.00 After starting the topic www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=113383 where I explained the issues I had with the Genius connection for voice. I discussed my situation with the Orcon accounts team. To cut a long story short as my exchange has been unbundled LLU I can now run a standard Modem / Router with an Analogue phone the VOIP will then be carried out at the exchange this I a better solution if you have VOIP issues with Genius.

Yeah they confirmed that to me as well on Twitter about a week or so ago - $99 plan but BYO modem if you want and if your exchange is unbundled. I wonder if they'll offer a similar product with UFB which uses the VOIP ports on the ONT rather than forcing users to use the Genius product for routing/VOIP.

UFB is very different from EUBA0 which is a best effort connection. UFB offers a dedicated high priority CIR queue solely for high priority traffic including VoIP. The ONT port offers minimal diagnostics for the ISP and terrible provisioning capabilities with absolutely no control over any of the SIP signalling. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Looks like the website has been updated too - if you enter a ULL connected address then it shows the option of BYO modem or 'Wifi modem rental', whereas a non-ULL address shows the option of either a Genius or Genius with handset

I for one would avoid using the Genius product if I were considering Orcon as an ISP. PSTN Emulation on ULL exists to provide solutions that can't be provided using Genius. It's still a VoIP connection back into the same softswitch. The only limitation it overcomes is possible QoS issues on EUBA0. Genius is a hit and miss device, but there are significant limitations to using the ONT voice ports, especially when it comes to any form of fault testing. If the ONT voice ports are so difficult, will any provider even use them? Seems to be an unnecessary expense if not. Actually on that note, I'm pretty sure I saw a thread on here depicting the UFB install of a Worldnet customer which used the ONT voice port for phone service.
