see there is going to be some changes at TV3 with C4 changing to simply "FOUR" and being changed to a general entertainment channel wiht a number of shows moving over from TV3.

My understanding of C4 is that it is not broadcast in HD. is this still the case?
I wonder if they will upgrade to HD once they make the changes.

Since C42 started I have had C4 on hardly ever, Hope they do manage to get more profitable, since they are the only viable alternative FTA to the govt mouthpiece.

Here is the official press release

MEDIAWORKS TV ANNOUNCES EXCITING RELAUNCH OF FOUR AND CHANGE FOR TV3

MediaWorks TV channel C4 is to be re-launched as a mainstream entertainment channel known as FOUR.

The channel is to adjust its target audience to 18-49 year olds (currently 15-39) and become broader in its appeal, with programming which attracts a wider, and more mature audience.

TV3, which has a current target audience of 18-49, will evolve its target to the 25-54 year old audience. While the FOUR change will be immediate, commencing early in 2011, the TV3 adjustment will take place over time, as it is a more subtle adjustment.

“This is a decision about where the biggest audience opportunity exists,” said MediaWorks TV CEO, Jason Paris.

“FOUR will be a channel which appeals to anyone looking for great entertainment. Everything the channel does will be entertainment. No news, sport or information, just pure escapism.

“Our research indicates there is a massive appeal for this broad, entertaining content, especially at a time when there are economic challenges which mean the easy escapism of television is even more compelling for people.”

Viewers can look forward to some exciting product on FOUR as announced at this morning’s Wellington new season launch announcement.

Shows including Joel McHale’s new comedy, Community, the highly-anticipated drama The Gates, which is set in a neighbourhood with a dark and delicious secret, and Top Chef: Just Desserts, a spin-off of the Emmy-winning Top Chef series are all new to FOUR.

As well as new shows, popular shows such as America’s Next Top Model and The Simpsons will move to FOUR.

Coming to 3 in 2011 viewers will also be treated to some hot new shows including Hawaii Five-0, the long-awaited remake of the popular cult-classic and The Defenders, a comedic-drama about two colourful Las Vegas defense attorneys, starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell, The Graham Norton Show starring the popular and outrageous comedian, Graham Norton and a new series with James May – James May’s Man Lab which sees James on a mission to save modern man!

Great new local content to TV3 will include The Almighty Johnsons, starring Tim Balme, and created by the award-winning team behind the hit Outrageous Fortune.

Jason Paris adds: “We have done some careful analysis of how our combined two channels can attract the strongest audiences, and it has become clear that these two target audiences are where the biggest potential lies.

“It’s no surprise this is also where the largest revenue opportunities lie for us as a business. Advertisers want to be where the most appealing audiences are. We intend to deliver those audiences in strong numbers to our clients, across both channels.”

Details not mentioned are:
* Is it going HD ?
* Is the music tv element being retained?
* What is going to happen to C42 ?

I noticed on the c4tv.co.nz site it mentions that there will be no sport so be interesting to see how V8 Supercars will be broadcast next year.

It is still the case, it is still standard defination. There are a few good things on C4. They have also moved a lot of their sitcoms over to it.

"No news, sport or information, just pure escapism."

I personally find escapism becoming more and more tied to HD these days
I hope its just dumping ground for reality TV shows. I don't care what resolution they are served up in.

So if there's no sport what happens to the V8 Supercars overflow coverage?  Off to the news and don't worry about who wins the race I guess...

I'd be very surprised if FOUR doesn't go HD as they have enough room on their DVB-T multiplex.

It would be nice to see C42 morph into a channel with a real schedule and pick up some music centric programming. A lot of music awards etc that we used to see on C4 aren't aired these days due to the focus on mainstream programming.

Given that it was called 'Chanel 4' before it was renamed to C4, Id say you're right and canwest wasn't part of it

Illogical numbering and naming of channels is rife in NZ, TVNZ call theirs 6 and 7 when they only have 4 channels, and they are only 6 and 7 on freeview. IMO they should have given them tvnz 3 and tvnz 4,

Mediaworks should take the oppertunity to rename both of theirs away from 3 and four since they only have 2 channels, and to launch with it called tv3 was dumb IMO.

TV3/4 don't give a flying rats rs about the V8 Supercars.

Since they obtained the rights on a bunch of promises (new dedicated sports channel, as quoted directly from Shaun Summerliarwhateveryoucallhim, promised extra live coverage), its been all downhill.

I didn't think they could get any worse until they dropped the podium of Bathurst this year in order to show rerurns of the Simpsons.  They have also failed to respond to thousand (yes thousand) of angry viewers on their own forums, they started off responding, but must have got tired of people hauling them up and quoting their own lies.

The sooner the rights either go back to TVNZ or Sky the better.  They don't deserve to have them, they are simply to ignorant and arrogant to care about the sports fans.

Agree completely with you there, nothing was more frustrating than getting to the last 25 laps, then TV3 throws in a 15 minute news bulletin (with a blimming ad break too!!). HEaven forbid we could delay the news by 40 inutes or so till the race finished, I'm sure tV3 has done that with other events.

Hopefully they lose the rights and a network with half a brain will get coverage instead.

And here's a few they can include in the shift from 3 to 4...

Top Model (from anywhere in the world)
Survivor (from anywhere in the world)
Project Runway
X-Factor, Idol, ____'s got talent
Outrageous Fortune (but only since Robyn Malcolm contributed to wrecking our film industry)
Any competitive cooking or dancing shows
