I totally agree - kidsZone is the best reason for TVNZ 6 - it's NOT wasting space, there are many familes in NZ that dont have or cannot afford Sky, and Freeview fills in some of that, especially for kids.

Its the content which makes or breaks a channel, and loosing 12 hours of kids shows is really the wrong decision.

So if we don't have kidszone, don't have (and dont want) Sky, and don't want to spend $$$ at the video store, what are we supposed to do to let our kids watch TV? Torrent the shows for them? Seriously there aren't many (any?) other options.

Timeshift whatever is moved to tvnz7 to a time that the kids want to watch it.

Kidzone may have been the best thing on tvnz6, the rest of it certainly was a waste of space, move it to the downtime on 7 and then use what was 6 to make money - seems a good all round solution to me.

It is really sad for those people who have got kids. Why do they always have these bad news stories before christmas. It reminds me of scrooge story.

I think tvnzs heartland channel should be on freeview, as much of that content was paid by people broadcasting fees, when we had to pay them

TVNZ seem to also have cut their morning/ midday and latenight news coverage off early this year on tv1 for the xmas break. Maybe it was the same last year, however TV3 have still got theirs going, so I have moved my viewing over to tv3 now.

Why does the "National" party hate the only major media that Kiwis still own: TVNZ and Radio NZ?
Their policies in many areas would make "Multi-national" party a more accurate name.

In opening ACC to "competition" it will be multi- nationals that get to cherry pick the more lucrative segments and send their profits overseas. There are many such examples.

Because they realize that it is not the govts job to entertain or provide digital babysitting shows?

Plus TVNZ has to pay its bills and do stuff such as make new programming and pay its staff. With the recession, the advertising market has likely not been that great. If they can package up a lot of old product that was sitting on a shelf, and persuade Sky to pay them to re-broadcast it, then why not?

Or would you prefer that the material stayed on a shelf, TVNZ made less money for its owner (the taxpayer) and money was diverted from the health or education budgets to plug the gap?

If they sold the rights to re-broadcast archival material overseas and made a tidy sum of money doing so I doubt people would complain. It puzzles me a bit that so many have problems with cash being extracted from Sky.

You can always count on discussion forums to provide a place to express zero sympathy for people's plights by those who are unaffected. The loss of TVNZ6 is a big deal for those with littlies and I'm glad that mine have just outgrown it recently.

I'm sure those affected really appreciate being told to pay through the nose for Sky, be reasonable because of various commercial and political considerations, or turn this into some kind of teaching opportunity.

set up your HTPC to record it for a month..... then just play it back on a loop.  Thats pretty much all they do anyway ;)

"The expanded TVNZ7 will have a two hour pre-school children's block, family-skewed information programmes, and a commitment to arts and cultural programme, Ellis said."

well.. its not totally gone then i guess. hopefully the 2 hour segment is still commercial free. i hardly ever had my kids watch TV live anyway - i just queue up the HTPC to record a few different shows - including the kidzone segments with kayne - and play them back whenever.

I kinda saw this coming. TVNZ 6's after 6pm programming was starting to show more youth shows. But at the same time was showing docos that should be on TVNZ 7. The two channels were suddenly merging.

I now see TVNZ 7 being a 24/7 channel after this change. They now will have an excess of programming to show.

Lets hope that the news won't be on during kidzone on TVNZ 7!

Lol. I am sure that there is only about 30 or so kidzone segments. But the kids don't care!

freitasm: We don't need another "youth" channel. They have C4, and other crap already. Kids on the other hand don't have quality TV - and Nickelodeon is not quality TV.

C4 is about to relaunch itself as "Four" and it will be targeted at an older age group than before. As it says in the press release, MTV has shut down it's operations in NZ too.

The youth market in NZ is not saturated!

DjShadow:
Runs midday to midnight, least they could do is put kidzone on between 6am and 12

I agree, there is going to be a lot of free space on this new channel. Why not put kidzone on in the morning. It makes sense: Shows for younger kids in the morning while the teens are sleeping; Shows for teens in the afternoon.

Also, what does everyone think this new channel will be called?

I can just imagine the transistion between "lets learn that 3 plus 1 is 4" and "large number of people dead from something happening" in the news.

No, Not gonna happen, and this is where the lack if younger options in the NZ ratings scheme (no equivalent of E like the US has) is gonna be a problem.

I'd rather see 6 turned into a classics channel, where they could play repeats of programs like Spot On, Count homogenised, Chips, A-Team, etc etc.  They could run kids programs for the younger age group from 7am until 2pm and then slowly increase the programs to PG and upwards.
