If, while I am out and about, I happen to find a lost plot lying around then I will be sure to return it to TVNZ.

I am under the demographic age (By not much though).

But everyone does need to remember this is for a niche channel and if you are not in the niche, it's not for you. Just remember that before you hate on the channel.

As someone who is in the demographic age group, I have to wonder:

A) How many people do TVNZ expect to interact with a live show between 4pm & 7pm during school/uni days
After all, school aged viewers may/should be doing education (ala Homework) or sports related activities (rugby/cricket/etc training) or perhaps even an after school job, and uni aged viewers are either going to be travelling back from uni, at uni, or at an after uni job,  plus another part of the demographic is likely to be working a 9-5/etc job.  Not to mention people eating dinner etc.
B) With above in mind, how are they going to get enough submissions etc via Facebook/website to power a daily live show

Then there are a heap of other points I could make such as, hasn't the recommendation for a while been that parents keep the TV/Computer separate, and if they expect kids to use their mobiles, why not just use text messages etc.

Reality is another big turn away for me, about the only reality (competition) show I'll typically watch is The Amazing Race and thats borderline irritating.

And I won't even touch the balance/relevance of their 8:30-10:30 block.

Over all, I doubt they'd even get an hour of me watching (and that'd likely be only if they included Amazing Race), the new C4 on the other hand?  W/ pure gems like Community & Outsourced they've got me hooked already.

asked my 16 year old son if he would watch it and he's still laughing, apparently hes got better things to do than watch TV and when he does he finds things to watch on the internet, personally they have lost that generation when it comes to the current tv model and this wont change it, and its only going to get worse as they get older.

Ahh well, there goes about a 1/4 of my TV watching - Brainiac ( my teenage kids + their mates quite enjoyed that), How stuff works ( or whatever it was called), Tales from TePapa and Meet The Locals was quite interesting - snapshots of NZ. Plus other bits and pieces that looked interesting.

P00!

Yeah but wouldn't you rather your teenage kids be filling their heads with the smut shown in the "get bent video"? (sarcasm).  As my mum always said "Garbage in, garbage out".
Just sharing my own opinion and observation here. (I'm under 30.)

I could be wrong but 'U' could come from a few things like the interactive content obviously (you), and the target audience would more than likely come from University students. If I was still at uni I'd love watching this content while "studying". Laughing

I remember having a chat with the dude (yes I said dude, haha) that runs Freeview (can't for the life of me remember his name), and he was saying the beauty of the digital platform is that you can have a lot of niche channels. This is a prime example. It'll be interesting to know what their target numbers are though.

As for those asking their teenage kids if they're watch...since when to teenagers tell you what they really like? Wink

They sure as hell won't tell you that they're still playing with their barbies and GI Joes in their rooms.

I didn't really go for the content on TVNZ 6 but it is a bit of a shame to lose a channel. You may find they might get the same numbers with this new channel. What I don't get is why Freeview doesn't have Heartland. I thought some of that content would be perfect for freeview.

TVNZ 6 has gone yes, but Kidzone is being relaunched as Kidzone24 on Sky TV on May 1st.

I wrote to the broadcasting minister about this because I'm quite disappointed that yet another channel under National Government, carrying NZ-On-Air funded programming, broadcast by a taxpayers owned TV company, requires the tax payer to pay a thrid time (now to Sky), to access TVNZ content rather than via free to air. What's the point in TVNZ if this is their attitude.

They did this with the Homeland channel as well. Except it went straight on to the Sky encrypted platform. A great NZ content channel, not available to tax paying New Zealander's unless they don't mind paying triple drip costs to receive it!

I smell a government almost planning to privatise TVNZ.

I've certainly seen that at TVNZ like other public sector areas, National are doing a great job of moaning at the unemployed while they continue to sack staff and wipe out jobs.

Cheers,
Gavin Stephens.

Now that's starting to pi$$ me off! Freeview is the perfect platform for a sole kids channel. So Sky gives Freeview Prime and gets TVNZ 7 & 6. And now they will have 2 exclusive TVNZ channels that are perfect for Freeview!

Yell

I just don't get the logic.

Not yet. I've only had the following:

Dear Mr Stephens

Thank you for your email to the Minister of 2 March. The Minister will consider the issues you have raised and respond as soon as he is able.

Best regards

Emily Faith
Private Secretary - Broadcasting
Office of the Hon Dr Jonathan Coleman

I don't know if Sky are getting TVNZ 7 as mentioned by the other poster? But Sky are getting Kidzone and already have Homeland. The last I heard, they were looking at combining TVNZ7 somehow in with Radio New Zealand. So they're non-commercial brands, but that doesn't make an apple grow on orange trees.

Just watched the teaser. Looks like a channel aimed at the Ritalin generation - who seem to comprise a significant segment of the youth population. I wouldn't be so quick as to dismiss it out of hand. It'll be interesting to see how it matures (especially the Facebook interaction) over its first year.

Well months later, I did get a reply today from the minister of broadcasting's office.

Here's the reply I got as a PDF         http://www.small.net.nz/reply.pdf

I originally emailed him with concern with the kidzone move to Sky in May, after seeing that Heartland was also on Sky, and not on Free To Air, which I'm quite disappointed with since I thought the tax payer was fundeing TVNZ.

Apparently he's prohibited in having anything to do with what TVNZ choose to air programming wise and tried to side step on to NZ On Air funding to draw attention away from the fact people are paying for NZ On Air funding, TVNZ broadcasting, and then having to pay Sky again to receiveall  TVNZ content in the move to digital.

Now I have no problem with TVNZ looking at the Pay TV route, but if this is the case, tax payers should be giving TVNZ a cent.

Gavin.
