Hey silly question but can anyone confirm will the royal wedding televised next Friday be in HD? I see both TVNZ and TV3 are running live coverage but neither broadcaster have announced if it will be in HD. I have also heard rumours the BBC's coverage in the UK is going to be in 3D!!!

HD version will probably show up as a torrent file somewhere.

Nothing surprises me with TVNZ there dedication to HD is pathetic to say the least, what about Sky or TV3? if MediaWorks had there act together they would be broadcasting it in HD and 5.1 !!

This would be a golden opportunity for one of the networks to announce “we will be broadcasting it in HD” would be great for the ratings and advertisers....lets hope MediaWorks come to the party!!
I see Sky Australia will be broadcasting it in HD.....good old New Zealand miss out again....

Don't they have to pay more to get it in HD? It could be good for the uptake of freeview if they marketed freeview with being able to watch the royal wedding in HD, like sky do for sports. It may get a lot of the older viewers switched over, but too late now, and another missed opportunity.

Well if TVNZ didn't send a plane load of reporters to cover the wedding they could afford HD..

I'm not sure that TV3 will really have much coverage of the royal wedding itself. Their programme will mostly be about John Campbell.

You really have to remember that the vast majority of viewers coudn't care less about HD. Those of us who do are in the minority.

The biggest problem with showing this in HD would be the linking costs. HD costs approximately four times what SD costs to get here. There is nowhere further in the world than NZ from the wedding...

Good news though, the SD pictures should look really good. Much of it will be shot in HD and as the main wedding broadcast is a pool feed, the broadcasters will have mostly the same footage.

I'm looking forward to comparing the technical quality of TV1 and TV3 on the night.

don't mess with me.... i'm the hd insider....

I assume the live streaming coverage on YouTube will be HD?

I think you will find the overall picture quality will be better on TV3, MediaWorks seem to put a bit more effort into the technical side of things...lets face it who was the first to go Nicam Stereo, who was the first to go 16:9 wide screen who was the first to go AC3 and HD!!

Will check out the TV3 coverage quality and if Youtube is better I'll watch that.

And then I wonder why I care about a random couple getting married.

For those of you with DVB-S2 receivers, there is coverage in 1080i on GEM from 2100 29/4 until 0100.

Might look a bit like youtube though!

GEM is 1440x1080i MPEG2 10MB/s. 10MB/s would be OK for MPEG4 but anything below 20MB/s for HD MPEG2 is pretty blocky.

On the other hand, the still pictures will look very sharp, so I'll probably watch Camilla's tears on GEM...
