Never buy second hand! A new merc would have come with a full service plan and would have made all of those problems trivial.

Dunnersfella: I however, would argue that anyone buying a Mercedes should be ready for disappointment. I thought everyone knew that? ;-)

I know it now, Nissan & Dishtv FTW :-)

I have been using the new firmware for two days now, and it is looking good.

The pixellation / jitter problem is largely gone.  There is still some odd jitters every now and then (say twice every 60 minutes) but no big deal.

Audio and video are now in sync during normal playback, and also after fast forward and rewind.

Yet to test the ability to record two channels (on the same freq/mux), will try this over weekend.

Also, the box can record one program while watching another recording.  That is good.

In short, so far so good.  Will provide more update over the weekend.

Have been trying out the new firmware - gotta say, in my experience it seems much better! having little to no pix issues, and no time-audio sync issues. I was previously experiencing significant time-audio sync issues with channel four, in that the sound was always some five seconds behind, but this seems to be resolved. Also briefly tested recording two channels while watching another (all on the same mux), which to my surprise worked well. I could pause channel four, set 3+1 to record and then watch 3 fine. Only tested it for 15 minutes.

Still to really test the tvnz channels, but so far I'm pretty impressed with the results of this upgrade...

I have heard rumours somewhere in the region of $30k to send an over-the-air update.

I'm not saying this is correct, just rumour.

If it is correct, it shouldn't be. Updates should be part of the freeview service - a small fee maybe to encourage better testing before release.

OK, I have been using the new firmware (ver 1.1a) for a week now.  It is pretty good in general.  The audio and video are finally in sync even after fast forward and rewind.

Howeve, I still have some problems to record two channels on the same frequency, using the EPG.  For example, I cannot use the EPG to record tomorrow (Friday) morning's "Good Morning" on TV1 (9am and 12pm) and TV2's In the night garden (9am to 9:30am) in parallel.

Also, I can't record TV1's Breakfast (6.30am to 9am) and TV2's Hi 5 (6.30am and 7am) for tomorror in parallel.

Furthermore, for Saturday (27th August) I cannot record TV1's Fair Go (8.30am to 9am) and Batman on TV2 (8.30am to 8.55am)

However, I can use the EPG to record Close Up (TV1, 7pm to 7.30pm) and Shortland Street (TV2, 7pm to 7.30pm) in parallel.

Anyone having the same problem?

Thanks!

Starting to sound good for the price. I am getting close to buying one, although I am in a bit of a black spot and even with a masthead amp I can only get terrestrial reception on two muxes (TVNZ and Mediaworks) and not the third (Kordia).

My previous experiences with a Visione VE4000 weren't that satisfactory - crappy as a PVR and strange file format that I just couldn't convert reliably. I want to go:

Record --> remove commercials --> reencode ---> transfer to NAS box

- How have people who have have had this unit for a while found it in terms of ability to convert files recorded on it to a more user-friendly format (XVID, MP4 etc)?

- In particular, has anyone tried converting TVNZ HD programming? If so, how, and how well did it work?

It was the TVNZ HE-AAC v2 codec that was particularly problematic for me last time.

Anymore feedback (positive or negative) on the latest firmware release? If my dad's Teac HD-B6T doesn't perform as a cheap PVR, I'd be interested in picking up one of these boxes instead.

If it's still shoddy, I'd be working towards the Panasonic all-in-one freeview/PVR/DVD box.

With the latest firmware it seems that all of the major issues have been resolved.

I am however still experiencing the Black screen (approximately 2ms every now and again). Its not major, but its noticeable and seems to happen more often when in the freeview menu.

There are some other little things which bug me but again nothing major. Just annoying.

- When in the recordings library, one does not know which shows have been watched or not (Like mysky they should show viewed). Its then easier to know which ones can be deleted.
- One needs to put in the annoying password every time you want to delete something.
- Streaming from a DLNA Server does not yet work

How did you guys manage this firmware update? Not working for me, trying to update from the beta version, but it won't go into update mode on startup.

Something to do with the fact that with the beta it doesn't switch off anymore? LED never goes red just stays green, startup is lightning quick compared to previous firmware.

I've tried switching it off at the wall before updating to no avail.
