Poked my head in Norman Ross Tower Junction today and noticed next to the stack of DishTV T1020 there was another stack of a different DVB-T unit which advertised PVR on the box, a bit smaller than the T1020, and was $129 or similar.

Intended to look it up online to see if anybody had tried it when I got back, but now of course I can't remember the name of it.

Anybody?

Nope.

Wasn't any I had heard of before.  I want to say Lazor or something, but not that.

The remote on that one looks similar to the Zinwell. Maybe just a re-brand like the DSE one?

MVT: Loranz, new brand NZ

That'll be it.  I thought it was Zeatek, but no, Loranz sounds right.

A big fat zero Google hits for it :-/

Yea, can't risk launching something in NZ with the same name it used overseas - there's too much chance of people discovering it's rubbish Undecided

Yea.. we got stung with one of these about a week ago. We were in Norman Ross looking for a HD receiver and comparing prices, and came across the Loranz which was on special for $119.

Long story short, within 24 hours the first one had been taken back because it was freezing up every couple of hours and the only way to unfreeze it was to turn the power off at the wall.. it constantly lost synchronicity between the image and the sound, and it kept loosing channels.

The second one did exactly the same, and to rule out my setup, I took it to my neighbours place, and it did all the same things there. So.. that one went back on Friday.

The product is rubbish and I don't know how any retailer can sell it in good consience.

By the way.. if you want to see their website, or lack-there-of, it's http://www.loranz-av.com/

I hope this helps

Rob

Hi All

It has been an interesting couple of weeks since my post above. I was contacted by Richard, the Sales & Marketing Director for the company that has developed the Loranz product range to discuss my experience with the Loranz set top box. After my initial shock of having been contacted by ANYONE about a faulty product, I sent him some details so he could call me.

Once we had finished the short discussion about how disappointed I was with the product, Richard outlined that he was very apologetic that the product was not up to the standard expected, and outlined to me exactly what Loranz had planned to get the set top box up to scratch, which included:

* Employing the services of a software developer to sort the random freezing/locking up of the unit, and the image/audio synchronicity issue
* Rolling out of the new update for the unit through the over the air updating system

I have now been using the same model of Loranz set top box for nearly a week now with the new software installed on it, and found it to be phenomenally better than my initial experience. It's been running pretty much non-stop for 5 days, and no lockups at all. It has an excellent picture output and sound output, and is now everything I expected it to be when I initially purchased it.

I really have to commend Richard and his company for seeing things from their customer’s point of view, and taking steps to make the product usable and enjoyable. Well done Loranz, I will be looking for your products in the future.

you have to wonder how it got its "Freeview Approved" status if it was so rubbish on initial release.

That is true, but we don't know what the testing schedule is like at Freeview.

The two things that impressed me with their backup support is that they are willing to contact and listen to the customer, and they are willing to make the changes to their product necessary to keep their customers.  I for one, am impressed by this, as it is a level of service I have not experienced in New Zealand for a long time.  Although my initial reaction to the product was less than favourable, in this instance I am willing to eat my words, and am enjoying the product.

Are they going to make the update available for USB upgrade? Because if not then any box which misses the OTA update, and many would, will be stuck with the dud firmware.

That's a really good question.  I will ask, and get back to you
