Have been looking for HD PVR and have down to DishTV 1050, Homecast HD9200. both of these 500gb hard drive and around $400.
OR Tivo.  the Tivo has 320gb hard drive and doesnt appear to be upgradeable.  Also do you have to have Tivo connected to internet as it would not be anywhere near the modem and I dont know if you can use wifi with it.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Tivo can be connected via wifi, it comes with a free wifi dongle thing.
You can buy an external drive for the tivo. You can also buy the homenetworking package to move shows from teh tivo to your pcs harddrive, although you probably want to do that overnight, as it can be slow depending on the size of the video.
Apparently the tivo is just $199 today with bond and bond, but you may want to phone them.,

TiVo needs to be connected for the EPG and system registration/occasional updates. I personally wouldn't bother about Caspa (movie downloads), so it hardly uses anything in the way of data.

I have yet to run out of space on the 320Gb HDD, mind you we do tend to delete programs as we watch them.

Keep an eye on the specials, the $199 deals come up fairly regularly at the moment.

Hi again, thanks for the heads up, I have bought it on line for $199 and they will email when ready to be picked up. Out of the ones I looked at apart from hard drive size the tivo seemed to be best option overall.  Hopefully I have bought the right terrestrial pvr

I've had a couple of DOA units, but once you have got it running it is a good pvr. Not perfect, but there probably isn't a perfect PVR.

yeah thats right. Some people cant get that there is no such thing as anything being perfect  and you have to make compromises.
Where possible I prefer to buy local.   I would probably be one to get a DOA unit.  I am known as a jinx in our family for that sort of thing.

I've got three units and had no trouble at all (knock on wood). Unfortunately when I bought one for Dad it was DOA. The replacement hasn't skipped a beat though. These things happen.
