Hi there,

Recently just moved home and the house has always had a sky dish and sky in the lounge. I have a satellite receiver (telray TS-511) in my bedroom and am having some problems. I'll try and outline everything about the situation so bear with me.

For awhile I could not get any channels at all, as when plugged in they would only get 17% quality. After a long time playing with settings I finally got channels with 80%. The setting that got this was using a 'Universal' LNB type with freq of 9.750/10.700 on Optus D1 and LNB power OFF, not a 10750 or 11300 which I tended to find mentioned online.

When doing an auto scan I can pick up all channels, including the paid sky channels. TV3 and C4 (12608) work fine, as do Four, Prime, TV3 Plus 1, Parliament tv etc (12421). In the channel list TV One and TV Two are there, with 80% quality but do not show any picture or sound... just a completely blank screen. And when I do an auto or manual scan with the TVNZ settings, I get nothing. I'm not sure how they got into the channel list in the first place... must have been found in a scan at some point, but it's weird that they have 80% and do not work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need tv2! :)

Thanks.

I would suspect your LNB has drifted off frequency and is failing. If so it's probably worse during the day when it gets hot.
Try replacing the LNB.

Yes +1 on that advice. The LNB is probably one of the old oval sky ones that are getting less reliable now.

The settings should be:

LNB: 10750
Type: single
22kHz: off
LNB power: on
pol: horiz 18V

Sounds like you've found the "sky" versions of tv3 and c4. The Freeview frequencies are 12456 and 12483 at 22500 symbol rate each if you want to tune manually.

But I reckon the LNB is bad.

Great thank you for your replies, will get onto that and post back. Can a Sky LNB be easily replaced?

Is the dish correctly aligned?
You can replace the LNB easily yourself if you have the crimp tool etc. You will then need to make sure the dish is aligned (and I wouldnt rely on mucking about trying to use the signal strenght meter on the sat box as this will need two people and a lot and lot of time...as the sat box will show a delayed signal).

They are very easy to replace. Connect and screw in the new one. You can get one for about $40 at http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/digital-satellite/satellite-dishes-lnbs/satellite-lnbs-brackets-c-6.html

I imagine it must be correctly aligned as all sky channels are received fine in the lounge through mysky, although it quite often comes up with error about atmospheric conditions and requires a hard restart... could this be related to the lnb too?

Hi again,

I didn't realise you still had sky running in the house. If that has a problem, Sky will replace the LNB for free for the subscriber.

If there is some reason for you to replace the LNB yourself, it won't be as easy as other's say. The throat diameter of the old oval Sky LNB's is narrower than the cheap replacement LNB's that you buy on Trademe.

You would also need a new plastic LNB holder to accept the wider LNB to fit it.

If Sky is working OK though, try those correct settings manually on the Freeview box first. And if there is someone subscribing to Sky at your place, get them to call in the fault to Sky. A professional installer will do it all.

Don't replace an LNB without optimising the dish with some sort of meter, the quality meter in the decoder would work. No replacement LNB will end up with the perfect skew or focus without using a meter.

You will not need a crimp tool. Just unscrew the F connector on the old one and screw it on the new one. WTF?

If you keep getting that message fairly often then it's a good indication of a LNB problem.
Ring Sky and they will fix it free of charge.
