Hi,

I'm after an internal serial header cable for a mate, but cannot seem to find one anywhere.  He needs it in order to hook up his Jaycar smartcard reader to his HTPC.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?  I got one off Trademe I couple of years ago, but cannot find any listings for them anymore.

Cheers.

I think I might have one floating around at home. I'll try and remember to find it and list it on Trademe at an inflated price for you :-P

Just to confirm you want a old fashioned serial "COM port" header not a USB or Sata header right?

Yep, the old 9 pin serial cable which plugs directly into a motherboard header.

Hmm, be careful - I have had identical looking internal serial cable headers with different pinouts ... same 10pin block, but different pinning on the DB-9. From what I recall they were 180deg out. Wasn't a manufacturing fault, as I have seen this on more than one occasion when I was messing around with RS232 devices.

Ahh, those were the days, real geeks could use a serial BO box, and re-pin recalcitrant cables in a blink ( or was that a squint) of an eye.
DCE / DTE, null modem, 6-8-20, 4-5, TX, RX, etc etc. That was just the physical connections. Baud rate and parity, stop and start bits - now there was a dose of true magician work !

None of this wussy plug and play USB stuff !!!!
:-)

I typed motherboard rs232 into trademe search, and it found some listings.
for example Listing #: 295801184

I made one up  - Jaycar supply connectors and ribbon cable - I think I had to rip down a 16 wire ribbon cable, and yes you need to google the pinout for the serial port of your specific motherboard. I have read that some people have issues with the functionality of the internal header, but mine works fine

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I will probably go for one of the listings.  Cheers.

If you havnt already purchased one, I found time to hunt for you.

Got 2 here, 1 in each of the "normal" wiring layouts.

1 is like this:

The other has all the wires from left to right going top bottom top bottom etc etc
