Bee: The biggest issue for me is to get onto a plan with NO contract.

Realistically, how often have you swapped mobile providers in the last five years?

Bee: But even if all the prices are similar acros all 3 networks I think (I Hope) 2 Degrees will have better systems and a better call Centre than Vodafone.

How often have you called their call centre?

All valid points, but you do need to take into account how often both of your points actually affect you.

Ive been prepay on Vodafone forever pretty much - not going onto a contract plan because of the 24 month lockdown.  Ive been stung with Termination fees from an ISP which sucked - we moved house and would have stayed with them if they actually had coverage in the new area!

And as for the Vodafone call centre I deal with them at least once a week for work, and have dealt with them for personal things too and they suck everytime.  Some of my friends have had some real good shouting matches with them.
Telecom is the same - dealing with someone from Egypt is extremely frustrating!

So yes very valid points that DO affect me.

Personally I have absolutely no interest in 2 Degrees. It doesn't even register. I'll stick with XT and Vodafone (work & personal)

I don't know about Nate, but I know that if there was anytime not to get locked into a 24 month contract, this year would be it with all the competition heating up in Telco land.

And it's not just  being locked in with a Telco for 24 months, it's being locked into that pricing plan for 24 months, when you are guaranteed prices will be falling rapidly. Why agree to pay todays prices for 2 years?

A lot more than I should have to if they answered queries on the first go. I called them 4 days in a row trying to get a question answered and was promised a call back every single time, but no one called me.

I called VF yesterday to get my final account balance and was transfered three times before they could give me my account balance.

So, yeah I don't call them much but when I do it seems to be a marathon of fustration.

But I agree with tonyhughes no Telco cares about you, they offer a service at a price and service level they can make the most money at and see who signs up. I'd change to 2D if they offered similar service levels and a cheaper price...

DarkShadow: It's a given Vodafone and Telecom will drop their prices soon.
Would you still switch to 2degrees if the prices are equivalent?

the answer is no

If Vodafone &Telecom drop the price as the same,I will support 2Degrees for sure because without 2D being launched we would still pay for the high rate that the two big company do such a long time now.and so why not support a new born baby?the answer is YES YES YES....

And yet here you are posting in (and therefore presumably reading) a 2degrees forum...

I will run on prepay for a bit with 2? to check that things are ok before moving everything else to them I think. I am sure GSM can deliver a reliable network or it wouldnt be so damn popular in the rest of the world, its just I have had so many problems on GSM in the past to trust it right off the bat.

I'm switching (I've also got my free sim card coming sometime in the future) I can't wait for 2 degrees, I just hope that the hype about the pricing is going to be great and competitive.

I got my name in the hat for a free chinwag SIm, but at the end of the day, my wife would need to swap networks too, to make it worthwhile as we are the two main recipients of each others' calls and texts.

I agree that VF and XT have little or no interest in the small fish who have a personal account or pre-pay mobile with less than a couple of hundred bucks worth of account spend per month. It'll be interesting to see if they change this attitude when they all start migrating to the other players - i.e. 2D, Orcon etc. I know 2D are the only ones with their own network, but the others will have competitive deals - you can be sure of it.

Dunno if there will be much thats makes a change worthwhile if termination rates remain as they are, but I'm keen to try them with a spare phone, a third option to the evil duopoly is all good.
And moving my main number to 2D - after 10+ years with Vodathieves Inc (I have a Bellsouth number), there is no reward for loyalty, but no contract either. I could be one of the few people that actually talks on a phone, just a few txts and no data use :P
2D could look at taking a leaf out of the Orcon book and offer a decent account plan for private users with NO contract - if it is a good product then people will stay, no lock-in.

Vodafone and Telecom have successfully run a duopoly, both managing to extract outrageous fees from their customers. It's not good enough to blame a small population since the bulk of our population is urban and the rest are largely ignored.

So why expect 2d to be any different? I'm sure they'll undercut the other two slightly, but not enough to make Kiwis feel they are getting anything approaching the deals that the rest of the civilised world enjoys.

Sure I'll swap if they're any cheaper, but I'm not expecting to be able to eat out on the savings.

I wish them luck, but most of all I wish us luck!

I have enough credit on my phone to last me the next 1-2 weeks.. so if Vodafone drop their prices to suit, then I wont be complaining. I'm not keen on switching until my last $20 is used up.

im on my iou on the 021 vodafone that I will be switching, I have just put $20 onto my main telecom 021 that I use mostly and will probably not port that over since it will mean getting another phone.

The other 021 vodafones I have are only used when I want to sell something and to be honest, buying a new $2 2degrees sim is more appealing then keeping topping up a vodafone sim annually to just keep it alive, so I will use up the credit on those and let them lapse or sell with a handset since a sim seems to make them sell better.
