Topic # 41493 17-Sep-2009 10:18 Send private message

I have been sending long txt's on my iPhone, and I dont like using txt speak, so they are QUITE big.. now when my last one arrived at my girlfriends phone, it was split up into 5 txt's.... but the 3rd one was missing on her phone. She got messages 1, 2, 4, and 5.. Is this a known issue from 2degrees to Telecom?

I am using a vodafone number that was ported to 2degrees about 4-5 weeks ago.

jahc:  Is this a known issue from 2degrees to Telecom?

No, they all OUGHT to arrive.

What happens is this - on detecting that you've typed a message too long to fit within a single payload, your handset will break the message up internally into pieces. Each piece is sent as a separate MO message (so be aware you're paying multiple times when you send a long message) with a special header flag and some binary data at the front of each piece of text.

The header is known as UDHI - User Data Header Information. In this case it eventually signals the handset at the far end to reassamble the pieces based on the binary data at the beginning of each piece. Of course both our messaging systems and those at the far end treat each message individually. They don't "know" all 5 messages are related.

Gateway to gateway a different protocol (SMPP) is used. The UDHI flag is encoded as a portion of another flag field in SMPP, but for all intents and purposes we transmit it as is to Telecom.

Telecom then tries to deliver 5 messages. To the best of my knowledge they can also intelligently cope with this even if the destination is a CDMA phone, which doesn't support UDHI (it's a GSM/UMTS feature).

There are multiple places where #3 could have gotten lost. Your phone might not have successfully submitted it. Our SMSC might not have successfully sent it to our gateway. Telecom's gateway might not have accepted it from ours. There might have been some other error in our gateway. Telecom's SMS systems might not have delivered it.

If there's a glitch in the system at any of those points then it may get lost even though the others got through If you PM me your numbers I can attempt to track our end, but there is no systematic reason why it will fail regularly.

In other words, normally, it should be fine. Go nuts!

Porting status should be irrelevant for national messages now, the early bugs are now taken care of.

Cheers
S

I should also add, shameless plug, that if you're in the habit of sending messages so long it takes 5 SMSes to fit, then you'd be 1c richer if you just called, with our totally awesome off-net rate of 44c/min.

Hooray!

or sent a single mms instead... actually no, that's insanely priced at 50c on 2 degrees... assuming that by "picture messages to anywhere in the world" they really mean mms, and no mention of video content in them...

It's 50c regardless of video content, and unlike some other operators, you can send them to more than just Australia with us. :-D

Well, perhaps 2D should replace the phrase "picture message" with the more standard "MMS" then...

Unfortunately I'm sure you've noticed that not everyone's a geek... "Picture message" it is. :)

Perhaps you should include video in the name since other telcos have different charging based on content?
