Topic # 67308 30-Aug-2010 22:56 Send private message

So about a month ago I ported from VFNZ to 2Degrees and thought Id share a little about my experiences.

The initial switch went flawlessly.  My number ported overnight and i was rocking.
I am well impressed with the price.

However little problems started cropping up.

1.  I cant send mms on my 2G iPhone.  Meh not a major.
2.  My phone regularly diverts calls to voicemail.  So does my partners.  It has no real reason to.  Im sitting on 12th floor of the Christchurch CBF with full reception.  It might divert 2-3 out of 10 calls.
3.  Texts can take hours to get there.
4.  I logged a fault for issue 2 and it has taken like a week plus for to get back to me.

This has led me to conclude that 2Degrees is not in a position to keep my custom at the moment.

As mentioned the prices are awesome and i really believe in what you guys are trying to do.

I just think the infrastructure is not yet in place to provide good service to customers.

Just wanted to get some feedback and to see if anyone else is having similar issues.  This is not a shot at 2Degrees as i think you guys are awesome, more in the nature of constructive criticism.

Cheers

I could be wrong, but I didn't think the first gen iPhone was enabled for mms, if not this isn't really a fault of 2degrees!

With regards to your calls being diverted to voicemail, again I doubt this is a 2degrees problem but is a 'feature' of 2G networks, you cannot use cell data and have a voice call at the same time so if you're using Internet (or your iPhone is checking email) you won't receive the call as data is active and the calls are diverted to voicemail.

Both of these problems are with the iPhone version you have not 2degrees and would not change whichever network you're on.

Personally not had a problem with delays on texts coming through on 2degrees but that may also be down to using data stopping a text come though due to them not being able to work at the same time as well and having to wait until the data connection is closed.

iPhone 3G and up don't have these problems when connected to 3G. It's not a 2degrees problem, you'll find it with all networks when on 2G

Funny, I had issues with calls going to voicemail and late texts when using vodafone GSM, which seemed to go away when using the 2 degrees GSM network on my obsolete phones.

I get the odd late text, this happened on VF too, they are using the same network here, so have the same issues.

Only other issue I had was net access via phone which kept asking for user/pass, which is now fixed.

Pricing is great, so was the speed porting the number and the nice bonuses for topups, etc.

Overall, quite happy with 2degrees even though their website is .... well less than one would expect in quality/content/usability.

sitting on the 12th floor in a building will not help at all this is way worse than sitting at ground level in a CBD

@ Teeps:

No its not the data thing. I have say wth my phone next to me doing nothing and tried to call it from my office line and out of heaps of calls a fair few just do not go through.

but some do.......so it makes me think its mnot a phone issue but a 2D issue.

As for MMS on the iPhone 2G.....well it worked fine on VFNZ with a few tweaks.

The data connection stays open a lot longer than when it's just checking email or when you've got Safari open though. Have you tried turning cellular data off under settings for a while and see what happens then?

What you're experiencing is a common problem with the iPhone when running on 2G as it's a data intensive phone and that cannot coexist with voice calls. I'd be very surprised if this was a 2degrees specific issue. I'm from the UK and have had all 3 generations of the iPhone (not including the iPhone 4) and have used my iPhones on different networks around the world and know this is an issue when on 2G.

As for MMS, I see from your previous posts that you also had lots of problems getting this to work with Vodafone so maybe it's more of a problem with your jailbroken iPhone and running software to enable MMS rather than the iPhone or 2degrees!? Thankfully MMS is getting to be less and less needed these days with more and more people having smartphones.

I just dont see it as a problem with my phone.

I did initially have issues getting it to work on VF (MMS) but it was running fine for a while.  As you said, its not a major.

Calls going straight to voicemail when i am in reception is a deal breaker though.

I have never had this issue with VFNZ......so other than the fact that 2Degrees uses EDGE on my phone rather than GPRS.....im not sure why this would impact on my receivinjg calls.

The fact that my partner has this issue on her 3G LG viewty at the same time.....whilst switching from VFNZ to 2D.....yeah.

Its a 2D thing dude!

Hi, can you PM me your details including you and your partners 2d #'s, the numbers and network that the delayed texts are from and times sent and your exact location when the calls drop or go straight to VM. There was an issue yesterday with delayed texts which has since cleared.

Also, have you tried your SIM in another phone to see if the same thing happens? If your partner is also having the same issues can you send me the details.

We appreciate any feedback and will do our best to resolve this for you.

Cheers

I can confirm that the 2g network use does cancel the use of voice calls, this has been discussed somewhere before, just can't remember where.

I have the 3G iPhone and 2D works perfectly, MMS, Data, Voice and Text and i have never had a delay with my texts since launch last year. I also only have 2/5 bars (connection) where i live

I'd be surprised if you never had this problem with VFNZ as it's a restriction of 2G that you cannot have both a data connection and voice connection at the same time. Maybe it's just that you didn't notice it happen as much as you currently are?

Did you try turning cellular data off? It's worth a try at least to put your mind at rest if nothing else.

Also, did you previously use wifi more and now using cellular data more? That would give another reason why you're finding more calls pushed to voicemail.

I'm not saying that it definitely isn't a problem with 2degrees, I'm just saying what is the most likely culprit and with a 2G only iPhone you'd get that on any network anywhere in the world.

I don't know how anything about the LG Viewty so cannot comment on the way the phone works, but again if you are in a 2G area and using data your wife will experience the same.

Just trying to help and put forward what is the most likely problem as I thought that was what forums were for, no biggie to me on whether you stay with 2degrees or go back to VFNZ, but blaming the network for what is most likely a restriction all 2G is a bit unfair.

If no one received most of their calls on 2degrees I think we'd be hearing a lot more about it.

I could be wrong, but I thought all of 2degrees infrastructure was in the North currently?

So if that is true, and if you are in Christchurch, you'd be roaming on VF's network anyway? (which would add more factors into it)

Just a thought.

Yeah i dunno her phone is 3G so.....unsure why she would be having the problem if it for the reasons as stated above.

Like i said, i have never had this issue with VFNZ....calls would cut into me using facebook etc etc on GPRS.

When i have tried to call my phone multiple times it has been sitting idle on my desk, not using data at all (push is all diabled!).

Wierd!

Even with push disabled the phone uses data. you have to completely diable mobile data in settings to prevent it from using data
