From reading the literature regarding the 2degrees auto top up feature I understand that my Prepay account will auto top up when the balance falls before $2.50.

What's not clear is what would happen if, for example, I request to purchase a $20 data pack when my account balance is currently $15. Does that mean that my account will auto top up in order to allow the $20 purchase, or will the system simply refuse to allow me to purchase the data pack due to my current balance being insufficient?

It's a bit of a pain if I have to top up as well as sending a data pack request every month.

No, the ATU request only fires if your balance AFTER a transaction is below threshold. Given that some people have the nag flag on and some don't, and that some would like it to work the way you suggest but others would complain if it did, it's easier to keep things simple.

If lots of people come on here and agree with you, I can think of a couple of ways I could make it work.

Thanks for clarifying, Salty.

I'm currently stuck on Prepay with this connection as I'm using it exclusively in my iPad, but longer term I'd really like to be able to shift it off Prepay and have it billed alongside my other Pay Monthly connection. I understand that you probably can't confirm or deny due to NDA, but I'm hoping that you guys will have some billing technology in the pipeline to allow multiple connections (including data only) to share a single billing account.

In the meantime I might just push a hundred bucks onto it and that'll keep me going for a few months.

I would like it to auto-topup or prompt for topup if attempting to purchase something that costs more than my balance :-)

What would be really great would be a "check list" of various features (that would depend on what account type you where on) where you could turn off and on the various features as you wanted, and set levels for auto-topup, etc.

+1 for both these features.

I'm testing a 2deg prepay SIM ahead of porting my own number over and keeping the prepay SIM as a backup internet connection at home. I'd like it to auto-buy 50MB data packs as necessary and auto top up for this to work well.

If I do switch my main phone over, I use ~80MB a month in mobile data so I'd rather auto buy the $6/50MB data for that phone too, rather than request it each time I go above 50MB bundled data as per the plan I'll be going on.

So both these features would be useful to me :)

If you want to keep the 2degrees SIM you have for testing as a backup, then you will need to acquire another 2degrees SIM to port to - when you port across the number you are porting replaces the one on the 2degrees SIM as I understand it.

Yep, that's the plan - get a new sim, and keep the prepay one as a backup/spare. Most likely in a phone hooked up to the home server via Bluetooth to run as a modem, or maybe in a Huawei E5.

No promises, but thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately I can't discuss which of these we will do, or when, but rest assured I will investigate which are possible and put them to marketing to decide. :)

Another vote for

* Auto top-up if your balance is too low to buy the add-on you're after
* Auto data pack purchasing when you run out
* AND/OR some way to buy data packs through the website rather than via SMS

If auto data pack purchasing can't be done, how about optional blocking of casual data use? Not just when roaming to Vodafone, but even on 2degrees.

This is something that 2degrees really quite urgently turn their attention to. The current SMS based method of renewing data packs is very awkward for iPad users.

Of course, the ideal solution would be an app.

Yes, agree. And if you're not paying attention when sending the SMS to buy more and you stuff it up then it costs.... I'd spent enough to buy another 2 data packs before I realised whay had happened.
