I am confused at this entire thread... Hasn't it always been common with other providers to cancel accounts that have not been topped up within 12 months? How dare you expect otherwise. This is a phone service, 99.9999% of customers will use their phones weekly...

It has become apparant that consumers of the day are never wrong. Perfect example here.

Credit expires 12 months from last top up and then account closed 13 months from last top up

Well after reading this although I agree it seems that the OP failed at their end I do however have something to say about one of the comments.

Joeksemail made comment that you don't get a letter about your WOF expiring. I am not sure about a lot of others but even with my car not being worth a lot the company that does my WOF sends me out reminders as did my last mechanic (who is a standalone operator unlike who i xurrently use). Maybe you need to get yourself a regular decent mechanic as the old saying "It's the little things that count" sertainly comes to mind here.

Of a lot of people these days are all focussed on the price not the quality of service. Which can obviously be the case here for the OP too if the number was that important and you had spent thousands on business suplies surely another $20 shouldn't have been that hard to manage.

You dont get a letter if your WOF on your car is about to expire (or not that I have ever had) because it is down to you to keep an eye on it.

Your car doesn't get compacted once your WOF expires, bad analogy.

I don't think many people understand that your account expires, there is too much emphasis put on credit expiry in the TOS and not enough on account expiry.

Mine tend to, lol. Here is an example:

In all seriousness I have lost good numbers before through poor management, or through lack of need to use them, I think 12 months is plenty enough time, and no reminder necessary, a warning text is probably of no use, but a warning email to topup before expiry would be very handy.

First off, I have in the last 5 years or therabouts had reminders in the mail about WOF from my WOF providers (had a few since i have moved a couple times).

Secondly I guess the guy did not comply with the T&C's but there still could be a nice good will gesture to reallocate the man his number so he can continue with his business plans and use 2degrees....
Does 2degrees have a customer retention team like VF does where they try and bribe you back to them with all sorts? Surely giving the guy the number he had back would not be too much to retain a customer?

I agree with Gingofthesouth it is totally the OP's fault this happened however if the number was still available (as in not reallocated to someone else) then surely he should be able to get this number back to him even if he has to pay for it again (which you would expect as that would take one number back out of circulation).

Either way though both parties at the moment seemed to forget that they have both dropped the ball as this is generating discussion over such a trivial manner. It should be just as easy for 2Degrees to give (sell) the number back to him and make him a happy business customer likely to stay with them as it would have been for the OP to actually use and top up such a vital piece of his business so things like this could be avoided.

Mine is still available on vodafone but only for a contract connection since they dont assign numbers for prepay, so going to get another motormouth on a friends business plan for a month and then move to prepay.

I've just noticed the auto top-up option, which tops you up if your account drops below $2.50. Presumably this will also top you up automatically after 12 months when your balance expires and thus keep your number alive (although loosing the expired balance). This is a good option for things like alarm monitors/diallers.

One problem I do have with all phone and ISP providers is that their T&C is updated only on-line and not e-mailed to you, and applies if you use the service after changes were published (somewhere) on their web site. Saw that now again when I read the T&C of auto topup. For instance they can change the top-up threshold from $2.50 to $10, update the T&C on the web site, and never tell you. But at least it is a preventative measure for people with similar plans as the OP.

Another thread that I started a few weeks ago came to the conclusion that an auto top-up will not necessarily kick in if you try to purchase/renew a data pack with an insufficient prepaid balance. So, I think it would be a brave assumption to think that an auto top-up would rescue you from losing your number if you don't proactively top up within a 12 month period.

I am glad they have the option for just topping up, but its pretty useless if you are on a low amount and want to buy something that it will not do it. Fine if the sim is in a GPS tracker etc where its just sending out SMS's, and casual data, but still needs manual intervention with buying the $6 data option.

Alasta is correct. Autotopup will not stop the account from deactivation.
