I got this on my Captivate on 2degrees (getting emergency calls only, reboot neeeded). I was using the JVQ firmware, just flash a different modem and it fixed it for me. I'm using the SRJV1 modem which was pulled from a vodafone I9000.

Just Google "android emergency calls only" and you'll see it's not a network issue but a bug, this issue has been reported on multiple handsets all over the world so it's not 2Degrees AFAIK

See Posts 161, 165 & 166 on the Modaco forum on the Ideos X5 where flibblesan explains a setting that seems to be the problem or at least relates to it:

Ive had a look at my phone doesnt have the line of code in the file mention. I see that link is for a different phone to mine.

I have reloaded my phone with a new rom, ill test and see if it works.
Failing that I will swap my work xt and 2degrees sims to see if it still screws up either phone....however my xt phone isnt a smart phone, so wont be able to see when the interweb etc drops out.

I did a search for s2 emergency calls only and there is a couple of comments around it but didnt see any answers straight away.

This problem has only begun to occur on my N1. I have not flashed any new firmware etc. and if it were a generic problem, you think you would heard more about it.

I have experienced this also on my parallel imported galaxy s i9000.
Nearly 2 months ago when travelling in the far north when running official samsung firmware 2.2.1 once or twice noticed it said emergency calls when it would usually not be in a no-coverage place.
And recently when staying in beachlands roaming coverage would float around a lot from fairly good then a minute later emergency calls only no coverage. I forget if I had to reboot to fix or not. This time running official 2.3.3

This is puzzling. This morning I was checking my mail etc. on the phone (using the house wifi) and had received a SMS overnight. Then I looked at the phone (I was sitting at my desk) and saw the emergency calls only icon had appeared.  This time I was able to get the network back by going into flight mode, back into normal mode and searching for networks again. The searching takes about 30s or so but it reconnected back to 2D when I chose automatic selection.

Been trying to set up Ideos X5 for data in Wellington since last night, have tried all the recent APN settings from posts here and other places but  - no luck.

Also sending settings to the phone from the 2d site and SIM Toolkit, neither seem to work.

Calls/Txts are fine, but no Internet or MMS.

Ive tried putting the SIM into another (android 2.3.4) phone and it also does not work. If I put my VF sim in either phone, it works no problem. Ill try putting the 2d SIM into a wm6.5 phone at lunch and see what happens.

Also tested a second 2degrees SIM card in both phones and it has the exact same problem - but it was definitely working at least a few weeks ago when I last tried it (although in a GPS tracker).

One of the SIMs is using a number ported from Vodafone on Wednesday night, the other one is a fresh 2degrees prepaid one.

Keen to get it sorted!

So, i tried the fresh 2d SIM card in a wm6.5 phone and could get a very small amount of data at a very slow speed initially, however after a minute or two it stopped completely on there too. The only setting that was set on wm6.5 was APN: internet. Both handsets show E for the network icon.

I then put the SIM into a 2.3.4 droid, and had almost the exact same symptoms - i managed to get a portion of stuff.co.nz loaded before it also stopped entirely.

I noted down these settings from android before powering it off.

Data enabled
International Data Roaming
National Data Roaming

Network: 2degrees
Signal strength: -89dBm 12asu
Network Type: EDGE
Service State: In Service
Roaming: Not Roaming
Mobile network state: Connected

2degrees Internet
apn: internet
type: default,supl
protocol: IPv4

Chucked the SIM card back into the wm6.5 and was unable to get anything through it this time.

Im in Mt Cook, Wellington - will try the same tests this afternoon in Petone.

Won't have access to the ported sim till later tonight, but apparently it is still showing the /!\ icon.

Back in Petone, everything working fine with the fresh 2degrees SIM card.

Access Point has now changed to
Name: 2 degrees mobile
APN: 2degrees
Proxy: 118.148.1.118
Port: 8080
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: IPv4

If I go into 'Available networks', I now get only one entry '2degrees'. This was showing only Vodafone entries back in Mt Cook, and very occasionally 2degrees 2G.

When I get home (after 4pm pub visit) ill try and get the Cell ID that its having trouble connecting to in Mt Cook, if its relevant, then log a call with 2degrees.

Apologies for all the thread bumps!

@Shacknasty - PM the SIMS MSISDN's if the problem connecting persists. Please include your exact location and if your 'roaming' or in our canopy.

Cheers

I have managed an entire day without my phone going into 'emergency calls only'

however, I have had the internet drop out on at least 2 occasions.

Is this a regular thing for 2degrees? Cause I just switched a perfectly fine VF sim to 2degrees, and was planning to do another later in the week - but starting to have second thoughts....

Thanks 2DegreesCare, Ill try a bit later and let you know.
