Hey forum-people!

I'm new to the forum, and this is my first post. //anyway...

I have (and love) my X5, like many others. I'm just curious, and so asking as a bit of a noob: does anyone think - or know - if it will be able to run 4.0 ICS? Has anyone tried to upgrade it to that? I'm aware that it's standard with 2.2 and that 2.3 is available from Huawei, and official updating is taking forever for most phones.

Not looking to root my phone, I'd rather stay genuine. :)

Thanks!!

I'd go as far as putting money on it that the x5 will not receive official ICS. Simply can't see it happening, the 2.3 update took long enough as it was.

If you want this you'd have to root your phone and hope they get the custom roms to a usable and stable state, no idea how it is for the x5. But you mentioned you're not wanting to do this. You're missing out - i'm running an Android 4.0 ROM on my HTC Desire and it's the best i've ever used, would never go back. Tis Cyanogenmod 9 Alpha ;)

This X5 ICS port is currently steaming ahead thanks to dzo from XDA.

I'm just about ready to switch over to it from Oxygen 2.3.2, but I'm a little hesitant because I don't think you can "roll-back" to anything other than official gingerbread.

Pretty much everything seems to be working on it though. The only hold up is video recording, I believe.

EDIT: I spoke too soon. It seems dzo (who is a Kiwi, BTW :) ) is just about to release version 1.5 which has enabled video recording.
I think I might have to take the plunge!

Huawei have just released an "Informal Shipping version" of the supposed new 2.3.5 software version.

Does anyone want to be the guinea pig for this one? I kind of need my phone over the next week or so.

Apparently the "Official" version will be coming on 24-02-2012, so next Friday.

Hmm, why the need to have official GB 2.3.5 first? Can I flash this ICS build over the top of a 2.3 oxygen ROM and still have it work?

I have wondered that myself, but I have come to realise it's all about the underlying kernel.

The latest oxygen release is using 2.6.32.9-perf, whereas the ICS build is using a 2.6.35 kernel.

I'm wondering if it is possible to just load the ICS over top of Oxygen and then flash the new kernel in the same way that you can flash the franco kernel.

That being said, I don't know enough about this stuff. I'm just getting to grips with it all.

I'm sure there is a good reason for having to apply the official 2.3.5 update first, I'm just not entirely sure what it is. I need to trawl the XDA forums a bit more I think. :)

Hmm, I thought ICS was based on a 3.x kernel?

See, that's where it is all very confusing.

It's obvious that dzo has gotten ICS to run on the X5 using the .35 kernel, but it's possible that it's meant to be using the 3.x kernel though. I'm just not entirely sure.

The baseband (cell radio) is not flashable through any recovery, only through an official update. The 2.6.35 kernel found in the official GB upgrade has an updated baseband and does not work with the froyo baseband. So the official kernel and baseband have to be updated together.

DZO has tweaked his ICS build to use the older kernel but I understand there is another build being worked on with a complete new 3.0 kernel by another xda member. It all just takes time.

Thanks Paul.
That explains it.

I did see that another XDA member make mention of a full 3.0 kernel port. Blefish, I think?

Exciting times ahead for the X5!

Lots of the X5's in NZ have amtel touchscreens instead of synaptics.

Interesting to note they still haven't fixed the issue with Amtel touchcreens in the official GB, they say wait for next release.

Elixir 2 (amazing app BTW) reports that I have a Synaptics touch screen.
Is this the version that is safe with the previous Gingerbread versions? i.e. doesn't have the super-sensitivity?

The B526 firmware should be fine for synaptics touchscreens. It is still listed as a beta again, but should be better than b522.

I am going to have to wait till next week or so for the atmel touchscreen fix before upgrading.

Checked my one today and it's an Amtel screen.

Seems to be working fine though on the latest 2.3.5 update (which I now here has been removed) on Vodafone. So this next reversion of the official release will be 2.3.5 again but hopefully suitable for the Amtel screen?
