Does anyone have any experience with these "hybrid drives" like in the new Macs ? I know that they're not actually a new concept but I'll be looking at the new 27" iMacs when they're finally released ....

Shindig: Has anyone introduced SSD to their SAN and seen a notable performance increase?

Yes.

We implemented a dedicated SSD layer (not autotiering - e.g. FAST) for a couple of our SQL Instances.

Our DBAs love them - indexing is almost instant and we struggle to actually stress them in any meaningful way.

We had to use SSD to cope with infrequent massive spikes in IOPS.

Thanks for that wasabi2k. That reply keeps my decision that SSD is the way to go in a predicament I have here at work. I like to work with real life examples.

cheers

Shindig: The "jump" from mechanical HD to SSD is just tops really! A true technological advance!

I installed a solid state in my wives laptop last might.. sure flies with Win8 installed

you have more than one wife? That would get expensive, fast.  Especially if you're upgrading them with SSDs:P

I got an awesome surprise tonight in my email inbox from Nick. Wahoo! Great stuff GZ and HP! Did the geekzoners do better than most picking up two winners?

Thanks for the Christmas present GZ and HP!

Cheers, Matt.

Shipping should be any time from this week, as it was scheduled to be send after the HP Discover conference.

Nick said a week or two from now. He is hoping to have them out before year end. The laptop looks awesome. I imagine FedEx will be up to their eyeballs for the next couple of weeks.

Looking forward to trying out the HP storage as well. There are less details on that than the laptop. I might have to pick up some extra cartridges.

I was seriously looking for a laptop for Caroline after her last HP mini got sold so this will fit the bill nicely.

Cheers.
